The headline for AOL’s July 30, 2025 exclusive clip says the opening of Weapons tells “the origin of the movie itself.” The clip page is not accessible, so that specific claim about how the film began cannot be verified here. The opening itself is documented: children run from their homes at 2:17 a.m. to George Harrison’s “Beware of Darkness,” setting up a mystery about the disappearance of nearly an entire class.
What the “origin” headline means—and what can be confirmed
AOL’s headline frames the first minutes as revealing the movie’s origin, but the page could not be accessed and no direct account from the clip is available. It would be speculation to say what idea, event, or conversation inspired Zach Cregger to make the film. The finished scene and the story premise can be described separately from that unverified framing.

What happens in the opening scene
The Associated Press describes children running out of their homes at 2:17 a.m. as George Harrison’s “Beware of Darkness” plays. The song is a licensed track used in the scene, not the film’s original score.
The sequence introduces the central disturbance: in fictional Maybrook, Illinois, 17 third-graders disappear, and only one child from their class appears at school the next day, according to the AP review. Amazon’s synopsis describes the premise more generally as all but one child from a class mysteriously vanishing on the same night at the same time, leaving the community to ask who or what is responsible.

How the mystery unfolds
Weapons follows several interweaving characters in separate chapters rather than staying with one investigator. That structure shifts attention among people affected by the disappearances and lets the mystery emerge through the community’s experiences. The premise and opening establish the questions without resolving them; explaining the eventual cause would go beyond what this clip-focused account can confirm.
How Cregger filmed the nighttime sequence
In a September 2025 interview with The Credits, writer, producer, and director Zach Cregger said the film was shot in and around Atlanta, Georgia. He described the opening’s nighttime montage as demanding: after the first unit wrapped, he and cinematographer Larkin Seiple began another shift with a new crew to film the children running. The production also faced a looming strike and six-day workweeks.

Cregger said some effects that look practical were actually visual effects, so the film should not be characterized as relying entirely on practical effects.
The opening song and the original score
“Beware of Darkness” is the song identified in the opening by the AP. The original score is a separate work credited to Ryan Holladay, Hays Holladay, and Cregger. WaterTower Music said the composers worked alongside the editing and visual-effects teams as the picture evolved. Composer Ryan Holladay described the goal as balancing intensity with “the mystery and the longing for answers that runs throughout the story without overstaying its welcome.”
