Spoilers for Seasons 3 and 4. Otis and Ruby’s relationship is brief, but it matters because it changes both of them. Their casual arrangement becomes a real romance, then breaks when Ruby says she loves Otis and he cannot say it back. The show does not reunite them in its final season; instead, Ruby’s story continues on its own.
How Otis and Ruby become a couple
At the start of Season 3, Otis and Ruby are in a casual sexual arrangement. It develops into an official relationship, shifting the dynamic between two characters who initially seem to belong to very different social worlds.
That contrast is part of the appeal, not proof that they are destined to last. Asa Butterfield told TVLine that the pair “are fundamentally very different people, yet their energies seem to work.” He added that they bring something new out of each other. That is an actor’s description of the pairing, rather than confirmation of a specific writer intention.
What the relationship reveals about Ruby
Ruby’s public image is confident and socially powerful. Her relationship with Otis gives the series a chance to show less familiar dimensions of her: vulnerability, affection, and the details of her home life. Mimi Keene described Ruby as opening up and beginning to consider another person’s feelings through the relationship in the same TVLine interview.

That change matters because Ruby is not simply a bully whose role is to disrupt Otis’s life. The romance lets her become more than her “queen bee” persona, while Otis encounters a relationship that does not follow the familiar pattern of his feelings for Maeve. Both characters are affected, even though their emotional readiness is not equal.
Why Otis and Ruby break up
The relationship’s turning point is direct: Ruby tells Otis she loves him, and he does not say it back. He is not ready to return those words, and the mismatch ends the relationship. Interviews with the actors described the breakup as painful and pivotal for both characters, not merely a temporary obstacle before a guaranteed reunion. The imbalance is important to how the romance reads. Ruby takes the emotional risk of naming her feelings; Otis’s silence is not the same as a promise that he will catch up later. Laurie Nunn, the show’s creator and executive producer, put Otis’s imperfect judgment in context in a Netflix Tudum Season 4 preview: “Otis is 17 and he doesn’t always get things right.” That helps explain his growing up, but does not erase the hurt caused by their mismatch.
How the Ruby story continues in Season 4
Season 4 does not bring Otis and Ruby back together. Ruby adjusts to Cavendish and confronts her history with O, who bullied her. Netflix’s finale explainer says Ruby realizes that exposing O’s past did not feel good. Her development therefore continues beyond the romance, through her relationships with other students and her own choices.

Keeping Ruby’s arc separate from Otis’s is significant: the series does not treat her growth as something that requires winning him back. The same finale leaves Otis and Maeve on separate paths. Maeve returns to her writing program in the United States, while Otis stays closer to home. Nunn described timing and self-discovery as central tensions in their relationship in the Netflix Tudum finale explainer.

The two romances offer different kinds of story. Otis and Ruby’s relationship brings out unfamiliar sides of both characters and gives Ruby a focused glimpse of vulnerability. Otis and Maeve’s story is shaped by a longer connection and the difficulty of finding the right time to be together. The distinction is an interpretation of how the show presents them, not a verdict that one pairing is objectively better.

Those outcomes support a useful contrast, not a claim that Otis should have chosen Ruby or that the series meant the two to be endgame. The relationship’s value is in what it reveals along the way: Otis and Ruby can bring new things out of each other, but that does not mean they are ready for the same kind of love at the same time.
