There is no shortage of stories to tell about NASCAR, but that does not mean Days of Thunder needs a sequel. Paramount has announced one anyway: Tom Cruise will return as Cole Trickle, Anne Hathaway will co-star, and the film is scheduled for theatrical release on June 2, 2028. The date and production plans could still change.
Is there really going to be a Days of Thunder sequel?
Yes. The 1990 film’s follow-up was announced by Cruise at Daytona International Speedway in August 2026. Paramount is attached to release it. This is no longer just a possibility being discussed, though a scheduled film is not a guarantee that its date or plans will remain unchanged. The Associated Press reported the announcement and details.
When does the Days of Thunder sequel come out?
Paramount has scheduled the film for June 2, 2028. That is the announced theatrical release date, not a guarantee; studios can move release dates.
Is Tom Cruise coming back as Cole Trickle?
Yes. Cruise is returning as Cole Trickle, the driver he played in the original Days of Thunder. The 1990 film is the starting point for the sequel, but no plot synopsis has been announced in the cited coverage.

Who is in the Days of Thunder sequel?
Anne Hathaway will co-star as a team owner and engineer. Jonathan Levine is set to direct a script by Will Staples. Cruise, Jerry Bruckheimer and Tommy Harper are named as producers. These are the announced credits; further cast and character details have not been established in the cited reports. Variety’s announcement report also covers Cruise and Hathaway’s involvement.
What might the sequel be about?
Specific story details remain unknown. At the announcement, Cruise said the first film was about more than racing, including “the community and the people here,” and said he was honored to reflect that world. That describes his stated intention and perspective, not a confirmed synopsis of the new film. The AP report carries his remarks.

A community-centered story could give the follow-up more to explore than a return to the track: the teams, workers and relationships that make racing possible. But without a disclosed plot, that remains a promising direction, not something audiences can yet judge.
Why the sequel still feels unnecessary
The original already has a clear place as a 1990 racing drama centered on Cole Trickle. Bringing him back after such a long gap may offer a new perspective on the sport, but the passage of time alone is not a reason for a sequel. The film will need a story that earns its return rather than relying on nostalgia or familiar racing imagery.

That skepticism is an opinion, not a claim that the film will fail. Cruise’s return, Hathaway’s role and the announced creative team make the project real; they do not establish its quality. Rick Hendrick of Hendrick Motorsports has praised the sequel and said it could do the sport good, but that is an interested motorsports figure’s view—not independent proof of audience demand or how the finished film will perform. No production role for Jeff Gordon has been confirmed in the cited reports. In February 2025, before the sequel was announced, Gordon said he had spoken with Cruise about the possibility and wanted to be involved if it happened. That earlier expression of interest does not establish that he is part of the announced film. NASCAR reported Gordon’s comments.
