The zombie survival thriller was filmed in Albany and the Great Southern, although its story is set in Tasmania.
What the photos showed on Festing Street
On the Friday described in the Albany Advertiser’s 24 February 2024 report, Festing Street was closed for filming. Military vehicles and what the reporter described as apparent corpses lined the quiet suburban street as the production staged scenes for the thriller.
The props and vehicles belonged to the movie set. The street closure was a temporary filming measure reported at the time, not a current traffic advisory.
Which Albany streets and locations featured?
Filming was underway in Albany and nearby areas in February and March 2024. Director Zak Hilditch told the Albany Advertiser that the production was in its first of five scheduled weeks in the region, with the first week including Middleton Beach and central Albany locations.

A 19 February 2024 local report said filming had begun on Sussex Street, with York Street also expected to feature and temporary closures planned over the following fortnight. Those were plans for that production period; they do not indicate present-day closures.
Later regional reporting said the film was shot entirely in Albany despite its Tasmanian setting. The Great Southern Development Commission lists York, Parade and Festing streets, Marine Drive and Maitraya among the locations. Read the Commission’s location report. What is We Bury the Dead about?
Written and directed by Western Australian filmmaker Zak Hilditch, We Bury the Dead is a survival thriller with a zombie premise. Its official synopsis follows Ava, played by Daisy Ridley, whose husband goes missing after a catastrophic military experiment. She joins a body-retrieval unit hoping to find him alive, but encounters corpses showing signs of life. The production announcement names Ridley, Brenton Thwaites and Mark Coles Smith in the cast. - The Albany Advertiser reported in 2024 that the production created more than 200 jobs for Western Australian cast and crew. When did the film reach cinemas?
Lotterywest reported that We Bury the Dead opened in cinemas across Australia and New Zealand on 5 February 2026. Screen Australia records a 2025 appearance at SXSW.
