We Are The Shaggs is a 2026 documentary about the Wiggin sisters and their band, directed by Ken Kwapis. A theatrical release in early 2027 has been described as the producers’ hope, not a confirmed booking: no distributor, release date or general cinema schedule has been announced in the available reporting.
Is We Are The Shaggs coming to theaters in 2027?
Possibly, but a 2027 theatrical release is not confirmed. An October 9, 2026 report said the producers were entertaining distribution offers and hoped to bring the film to theaters early the following year. That indicates an aspiration, not a finalized deal or release date. Read the October 9 report.
The film has screened at festivals and at a university museum, but those engagements do not establish a wider theatrical release. No confirmed distributor, market-wide booking or ticket-sale information is available in the cited listings. Check for an announcement from the filmmakers, a distributor or local theaters before making plans.
What is the documentary about?
Directed and written by Ken Kwapis, the 2026 film revisits the Shaggs’ history and the debate around their music. It features surviving sisters Dorothy and Betty Wiggin and combines interviews, archival material and animated sequences. The Wisconsin Film Festival’s description also mentions home movies, cover performances, and perspectives from people who defend or criticize the band. Program listings give the runtime as roughly 98 to 100 minutes.

Who were the Shaggs?
The Shaggs were sisters Dorothy, Betty and Helen Wiggin, who grew up in rural New Hampshire. Their father, Austin Wiggin, insisted they form a band, partly because he believed in a prophecy that his daughters would become stars. The group recorded Philosophy of the World in 1969.
The album was later rediscovered and attracted listeners and musicians, though the band’s reception remains sharply divided. The documentary takes up that unsettled legacy rather than treating the Shaggs’ reputation as settled: it considers why the music has been dismissed, celebrated and debated.

The Shaggs’ 1969 album is central to the story because its later rediscovery helped create the band’s enduring, contested reputation. The documentary looks at how listeners interpret the music and argue over its place in popular culture. Its mix of defenders, detractors and archival material makes the question of the Shaggs’ legacy part of the film itself, not simply background to their biography. Northwestern’s and the Wisconsin Film Festival’s program descriptions provide further details about the film’s approach.
