Anne Frank was a German-born Jewish teenager who became a perceptive diarist and aspiring writer while her family hid from Nazi persecution in Amsterdam. Her diary records an individual life—its humor, ambitions, family tensions and frustrations—as well as the danger and confinement Jews faced under Nazi occupation. Anne was arrested with the other people in hiding, deported through Nazi camps and died at Bergen-Belsen in 1945, aged 15.
Who was Anne Frank before the diary?
Annelies Marie Frank was born in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, on June 12, 1929, to Otto and Edith Frank. After the Nazis came to power in 1933, Otto moved to Amsterdam. Edith and the children followed, with Anne arriving in February 1934. The family sought refuge in the Netherlands, but that refuge became precarious after Germany occupied the country in May 1940. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum’s biography of Anne Frank traces these events.
Anne was more than the author of a famous wartime account. She wrote about school, friends, family, feelings and ordinary routines. Her entries show a teenager who could be observant, self-critical, humorous and ambitious. She hoped to become a writer or journalist, and wrote stories and essays as well as diary entries. Reading her as a particular young person matters: the diary is not simply a set of inspirational sayings, but writing made under the threat of discovery and the strain of confinement.
Why did Anne Frank go into hiding?
Anne and her family were Jews targeted by Nazi persecution. After the German occupation of the Netherlands, anti-Jewish measures intensified, and deportations began. In July 1942, as the danger grew, Anne, her sister Margot, and their parents, Otto and Edith, went into hiding at 263 Prinsengracht in Amsterdam, behind premises associated with Otto’s former business. Their decision was a response to persecution, not a voluntary retreat from the world.

Who hid in the Secret Annex?
Eight people lived in the concealed rooms: the four Franks; Hermann, Auguste and Peter van Pels; and Fritz Pfeffer. Helpers, including Miep Gies and Bep Voskuijl, brought food and other necessities despite the risks of assisting people in hiding. The cramped, hidden rooms became the setting for Anne’s writing and the daily life of all eight residents.
The confinement was both physical and psychological. In a diary entry dated July 11, 1942, Anne wrote: “The fact that we can never go outside bothers me more than I can say.” The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum reproduces the entry in its account of Anne Frank’s diary.

What did Anne write, and why did she revise her diary?
Anne began keeping a diary before the family went into hiding, and she continued writing in the Annex. Her entries preserve her thoughts and daily observations, but the familiar published book is not simply an untouched record. In March 1944, Anne heard a broadcast by Dutch minister Gerrit Bolkestein, who urged people to preserve records of life under occupation. She then began reshaping her diary with a future readership in mind, giving the proposed book the title The Secret Annex.
The Anne Frank House says Anne’s rewritten account covered June 12, 1942, to March 29, 1944, and that she produced around 50,000 words on more than 215 sheets while working on the project. Those figures describe her revised manuscript, not the combined extent of all her diary writing. Her last diary entry is dated August 1, 1944. How did Anne Frank’s diary survive, and what does the published book contain?
On August 4, 1944, German SS and police discovered the hiding place and arrested its residents. Miep Gies and Bep Voskuijl found Anne’s writings after the arrest. Miep kept the papers in the hope that she could return them to Anne, then gave them to Otto Frank after the war. Otto, the sole survivor of the immediate Frank family, assembled the first Dutch book from Anne’s rewritten text, selected original diary material and some short stories, making editorial decisions as he did so. Het Achterhuis appeared on June 25, 1947.
Anne’s own revised manuscript and Otto’s postwar compilation are distinct stages in the diary’s publication history. The Anne Frank House says the 1986 scientific edition presented the versions side by side. Readers encountering a later edition can therefore check which version or translation it presents and whether it includes historical and editorial notes, rather than assuming every edition reproduces one identical, unedited manuscript.

What happened to Anne Frank?
After their arrest, the eight people from the Annex were deported from Westerbork to Auschwitz-Birkenau in early September 1944; the transport arrived on September 5. Anne and Margot were transferred to Bergen-Belsen in early November. Both died there of typhus in February or March 1945. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum gives that month range rather than a confirmed exact day; the Anne Frank House also recounts the sisters’ deaths. Anne was 15. Otto survived.
The precise circumstances of the Annex’s discovery have not been established. An anonymous tip was long assumed, while a later theory connects the discovery to an investigation into illegal work and ration-coupon fraud. The available accounts do not establish betrayal as fact, so it should not be presented as the proven explanation.

Why is Anne Frank remembered?
Anne’s diary endures because it brings a young person’s distinct voice into the history of the Holocaust. Its literary ambition and editorial history are part of that story, as is the violence that ended her life. Remembering Anne fully means neither reducing her to a symbol nor separating her pages from the persecution that forced her family into hiding.
