Watchmen Chapter I makes a persuasive case as the closest screen translation yet of Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons’ graphic novel. Its close use of the comic’s panels, narration and dialogue is also a limitation: fidelity can preserve the source without making every scene work as cinema. The result is a strong, unusually faithful adaptation, but not an unqualified improvement on the book—or a proven “best” by any objective measure.
What is Watchmen Chapter I?
DC presents Watchmen Chapter I as the first half of a two-part animated adaptation of the 1986 graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. Set in an alternate 1985, the story begins after government-sponsored superhero The Comedian is murdered. Rorschach investigates, drawing former allies into a conspiracy as the threat of world war looms. Brandon Vietti directed; J. Michael Straczynski adapted the story for the screen. The main voice cast includes Matthew Rhys, Katee Sackhoff and Titus Welliver. DC’s film page and Paramount’s title listing provide the premise and credits.
Runtime listings differ by service and version: Paramount lists 90 minutes, Apple TV lists 1 hour 23 minutes, and the BBFC records home-entertainment versions at 83m 43s and 80m 20s. These figures should not be treated as one universal runtime. The BBFC record distinguishes the two versions; Apple TV’s listing gives its own runtime.
Why call it the closest adaptation yet?
The strongest argument is its directness. TheWrap reports that the film recreates many comic panels and retains much of the original narration and dialogue. The World’s Finest review likewise praises the panel recreations and script, and describes the film as covering the comic’s first five issues. That makes “faithful” a specific description of its choices, not just a general compliment. TheWrap’s review and The World’s Finest review assess those elements.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe comparison needs a boundary: HBO’s 2019 Watchmen is a continuation, not another screen retelling of the same source story. It should not be ranked against Chapter I as if both adapt Moore and Gibbons’ plot. TheWrap makes this distinction in its discussion of the film. TheWrap’s review

Where does the adaptation fall short?
Fidelity can feel static
Copying a panel’s composition is not the same as finding a visual language that makes it move. TheWrap’s William Bibbiani calls the film admirable and relatively successful, but argues that its visualizations struggle and that it sidesteps the challenge of adapting a story whose form depends on comics. That is a critic’s assessment, not a measurable defect, but it points to the central trade-off: the film often preserves the look of the page rather than transforming it into something distinctly cinematic. Pacing and visual consistency are uneven
The World’s Finest review identifies pacing problems and visual inconsistencies. Vietti has acknowledged that the screen version reshuffles events: “There are some events that we had to reshuffle a little bit because it just works better for a movie format,” he told DC. The comment explains that the adaptation is not a scene-for-scene transcription, even while much of its dialogue and imagery remain close to the comic. One key sequence shows animation’s opportunity
Vietti identifies Doctor Manhattan’s origin—and the challenge of showing a character who experiences time simultaneously—as his biggest artistic challenge. Animation can attempt to render that perception in ways live action or still panels may not. The director’s stated intention is not proof that every viewer will find the sequence effective, but it illustrates the medium’s potential beyond reproducing comic layouts. Vietti’s interview with DC
Is it a good starting point for viewers who haven’t read the comic?
It can introduce the characters and central mystery, but close fidelity does not guarantee easy orientation. One Rotten Tomatoes review excerpt warns that elements of the story may confuse newcomers; that is an individual critic’s response, not evidence that all first-time viewers will struggle. If the conspiracy feels dense, the source comic offers the context and layered storytelling that a compressed screen adaptation may not fully reproduce. Rotten Tomatoes’ review page

Watchmen Chapter I is a strong choice for viewers who want to see Moore and Gibbons’ story translated with unusual care for its panels and words. Its shortcomings matter precisely because the fidelity is so conspicuous: faithful images and dialogue cannot, by themselves, solve the problem of translating a layered comic into a paced, coherent film. It earns “closest adaptation yet” more convincingly than “best adaptation” as an objective claim. The first half also leaves the story unfinished by design, with the second chapter still to come.
