On May 2, 2024, Irma Thomas joined the Rolling Stones onstage at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival to sing “Time Is on My Side.” The moment joined the singer of a 1964 recording that inspired the Stones’ later-1964 cover with the band whose version became closely associated with the song. The Associated Press described it as the Stones’ first appearance at Jazz Fest. Associated Press
What happened at Jazz Fest
Thomas joined the Rolling Stones for “Time Is on My Side” during the band’s May 2, 2024 set at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. AP reported that other festival stages went silent while the Stones played, concentrating the festival around the performance. Associated Press
Festival producer Quint Davis explained the decision: “We didn’t want to have 13 empty stages and no people in front of them when the Stones start singing favorites like ‘(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction’ and ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash,’” Associated Press
Why Thomas’s appearance made the song’s history visible
Thomas recorded “Time Is on My Side” in 1964, and AP says her version inspired the Rolling Stones’ cover later that year. At Jazz Fest, the performer of the earlier recording stood beside the band whose own recording helped make the song widely associated with them. The sources establish Thomas as a performer of the song, not its composer. Associated Press Apple Music: Irma Thomas
