The Internet Archive’s “livestream history” is a live view of preservation in progress: operators scanning microfiche for Democracy’s Library, the Archive’s project to make government publications freely accessible online. It is not a new service for watching archived livestreams. The project was announced on May 21, 2025; its official announcement is the safest place to check the embedded YouTube player and find out whether the stream is available now.
What the livestream shows
The camera looks into a working digitization center, not a studio or an archive-search page. The Internet Archive’s launch announcement described five active microfiche scanning stations, including a close-up view of one. Operators place film sheets beneath high-resolution cameras while software turns their images into individual pages.
From film sheet to searchable pages
- Position the microfiche. An operator places a card beneath a camera.
- Capture and assemble images. The system takes detailed images of the sheet and software stitches them together.
- Find individual pages. Automated tools identify and crop pages; one card can hold up to 100 pages, according to the Internet Archive.
- Process and publish. The extracted pages are processed for full-text search, supplied with metadata, and added to public collections.
This is a glimpse of work in progress, not the finished digital record. The announcement describes the intended workflow; it does not promise that every card appears online immediately, that text recognition is error-free, or that every item has complete metadata.
What microfiche is
Microfiche is a flat sheet of film carrying many miniaturized document images. Libraries and government agencies used it to store material such as newspapers, court records, and government publications in a compact form. It is related to microfilm, but the terms are not interchangeable: microfiche is generally a sheet, while microfilm is commonly held on a roll or reel.

To read the material, an image on the film must be captured and converted into a digital representation. Searchable text and useful catalog information are further steps beyond making an image. That is why digitization involves more than pointing a camera at a sheet.
What Democracy’s Library is digitizing
Democracy’s Library is an Internet Archive initiative to collect, digitize, and provide free public access to government publications. The May 2025 announcement names microfiche collections of U.S. Government Publishing Office documents, Canadian government documents, U.S. court documents, and United Nations publications. Examples of government material include environmental-impact reports and court decisions.

Records kept in older formats can be inconvenient to consult and, in some cases, may otherwise be available mainly through costly specialist databases. Digitizing them can make it easier for researchers, journalists, librarians, and the public to find and consult the record. The Internet Archive’s Democracy’s Library collection page is the destination for exploring the project’s online material.
Free access does not, by itself, establish that every item is public domain or can be reused without restriction. Check the rights information attached to an individual record before republishing or reusing it.

Where to watch—and whether it is live now
Start with the Internet Archive’s official announcement, which embeds the YouTube stream. If the player is unavailable, check the Internet Archive’s official YouTube channel or the Democracy’s Library page. A live feed, an archived broadcast, and the completed digitized records are different things; the collection page is for exploring the latter.
At launch, the Internet Archive said the stream was planned for Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. U.S. Pacific Time, excluding U.S. holidays. That is the schedule announced on May 21, 2025, not confirmation of current hours. The project’s current broadcast status, schedule, and any second shift are not established here, so check the official player for the latest availability.

Why show preservation work live?
The livestream makes an ordinarily hidden process visible. Internet Archive founder Brewster Kahle framed it as a way to expose the work and infrastructure involved in preserving the public record. Rather than showing only polished scans, the feed lets viewers watch the physical source material being handled and the early stages of its conversion into online records.
Expect observation rather than a changing entertainment program: scanning can be repetitive, and a card may contain many pages rather than one document. The feed is not a general-purpose archive of livestreams, nor is the camera feed itself the searchable archive. Some records may be harder to find or read if the original film is faint, skewed, or degraded, and the announcement gives no OCR accuracy rate or completion timetable.

The Internet Archive credits appmaker and designer Sophia Tung with bringing the livestream experience to life. The scanning operation itself involves Archive staff and operators; Tung’s credit is for the livestream, not management of Democracy’s Library as a whole.
