Molly Shannon brought back Mary Katherine Gallagher, her Saturday Night Live character, in a comedy video sent by Kamala Harris to the Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner on October 17, 2024. The sketch casts Gallagher as an unlikely speech adviser, offering Harris jokes and pop-culture references as she prepares for the New York event. Harris sent the video rather than attending; Donald Trump appeared in person, according to Yahoo Entertainment’s October 18 report of Emily Zemler’s Rolling Stone story.
What happens in Molly Shannon’s video?
The sketch imagines Harris asking Gallagher to help write her speech for the dinner. Gallagher responds with comic advice, mixing earnest-sounding guidance with references and jokes. The report says she invokes House of the Dragon while urging Harris not to lie, cautions against insulting Catholics, and brings up Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off.”
When Gallagher warns about Catholic jokes, Harris answers with a joke about criticizing Detroit while in Detroit. These are moments as summarized in the report, not a complete transcript of the video.
Which ‘SNL’ character does Molly Shannon reprise?
Shannon plays Mary Katherine Gallagher, the Catholic schoolgirl character she portrayed on Saturday Night Live. The character’s return is the device that turns a speech-writing premise into a comic exchange between Gallagher and Harris.

Why did Harris send a video to the Al Smith dinner?
The Alfred E. Smith Memorial Foundation Dinner is an annual election-season event where presidential candidates traditionally roast one another and themselves. Harris’s contribution was a pre-recorded comedy video rather than an in-person appearance. Trump attended the New York dinner.
In its account of the event, Yahoo Entertainment reported that Trump criticized Harris’s absence as disrespectful to the dinner and the Catholic community, then declined to deliver self-deprecating jokes. Those remarks are attributed here to that report.
