Jane Fonda’s speech is featured in Netflix’s official recap of the 2025 SAG Awards, which includes a prompt to watch it in full. Fonda delivered the address while accepting the 60th SAG Life Achievement Award on February 23, 2025. Replay access may vary by location or require sign-in.
Where to watch Jane Fonda’s SAG Awards speech
Start with Netflix’s recap, “Watch Jane Fonda’s SAG Awards Speech and Relive the Unforgettable Moment.” Published February 24, 2025, it points readers to the full speech. Netflix streamed the ceremony live in 2025, but the recap does not establish that the replay remains accessible everywhere or without an account.
News coverage can help with context, but it is not a substitute for the full address: The Associated Press’s report on the 2025 SAG Awards and TIME’s analysis of Fonda’s speech quote or discuss portions of it rather than offering a complete transcript.
What occasion was Fonda speaking for?
Fonda accepted the SAG Life Achievement Award, SAG-AFTRA’s highest tribute, at the 31st Screen Actors Guild Awards. Julia Louis-Dreyfus presented the award. The ceremony took place at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles on February 23, 2025, and streamed live on Netflix.

The honor recognizes a career; it is distinct from the ceremony’s competitive acting awards. SAG-AFTRA announced Louis-Dreyfus as presenter and the Netflix broadcast details on February 20, 2025, in its presenter announcement.
Why the speech was described as rousing
She made empathy the link between acting and public life
Fonda began with the work of actors: understanding another person deeply enough to portray a life from the inside. Netflix quotes her saying, “What we, actors, create is empathy.” She argued that this capacity can help audiences recognize other people’s lives and suffering, including people very different from themselves.

She also challenged the idea that empathy is weakness. Netflix quotes her brief formulation: “Woke just means you give a damn about other people.” These are excerpts reported by Netflix, not a complete transcript.
She turned that argument into a call for solidarity
Fonda then connected empathy to collective action. In the Associated Press’s account, she called the moment “our documentary moment” and warned that people would be hurt, urging listeners to make room for broad solidarity: “We are going to need a big tent to resist what’s coming at us.” Those are her characterizations of political developments, not neutral descriptions of them.

TIME’s analysis highlights the speech’s appeal not to isolate, but to remain in community and help vulnerable people. Fonda also drew on acting examples to argue for understanding people shaped by trauma, even when their actions are condemnable. The result was both an award acceptance and a political appeal, centered on empathy and mutual support rather than a detailed policy program.
