In December 2025, The Washington Post kept its AI-generated audio feature, Your Personal Podcast, in rollout after staff reported errors within days of launch. The Post’s position, as reported at the time, was that the feature was in beta and that its internal product review recommended proceeding while iterating on the problems and disclosing that the tool can make mistakes. Neither the reporting nor the Post’s help page establishes whether the feature was still running on October 8, 2026.
What Your Personal Podcast was
Your Personal Podcast was introduced in the Post’s mobile app in December 2025 as a personalized audio briefing built from the paper’s journalism. Listeners could choose topics, hosts and episode duration. The launch announcement also described plans for follow-up questions. The Post’s help page describes these options and documents an eight-minute maximum episode length during beta, with access through the app. That help-page capture predates October 2026, so the length limit and access rules describe the beta as documented then, not as confirmed today.
What staff reported in the first 48 hours
Semafor reported on December 11, 2025 that four people familiar with the situation described multiple errors within 48 hours of launch. The categories they described were:
- Pronunciation problems.
- Changes to story content.
- Fabricated or misattributed quotes.
- Commentary that could make a source’s statement sound like the Post’s own position.
These are reported examples drawn from the accounts of four people. They do not establish that every episode contained errors. The four-person figure counts sources, not episodes or individual error events.

The internal test numbers and what they measure
Semafor reported on December 14, 2025 that more than two-thirds of scripts failed a metric intended to determine whether they met the Post’s standards. TheWrap, on December 15, gave the range as 68% to 84% after three rounds of internal testing. The figures come from internal script evaluations, not from a count of published episodes.
| Figure | What it measured | What it does not show |
|---|---|---|
| 68% to 84% of scripts failed (TheWrap, December 15, 2025, citing internal testing) | Share of AI-generated scripts failing a pass/fail publishability metric after three test rounds | An error rate across public podcast episodes, or the share of episodes with a fabricated quote |
| “More than two-thirds” failed (Semafor, December 14, 2025) | The same internal evaluation, described in broader terms | A separate measurement or a later result |
| Testing rule | Testers were instructed to fail any script they doubted | How a neutral reviewer applying a different standard would score the same scripts; not stated in the reporting |
| Four people familiar with the errors (Semafor, December 11, 2025) | Sources describing errors seen in the launch week | The number of episodes or error events involved |
The pass/fail design matters for reading the percentage. A script was counted as failing when testers doubted it, so the figure describes how cautious the test was as well as how the scripts performed.

Why the Post kept the feature running
The beta framing
A Washington Post spokesperson told TheWrap that the feature was in beta. The spokesperson defended the process in these words: “This is how products get built and developed in the digital age: … and then Beta. Only if they prove to be successful for the customer do they then get launched. As stated clear on Your Personal Podcast, it is currently in Beta.” The statement treats the launch as a stage in product development, with the beta label serving as the disclosure to users.
The internal product review
Semafor reported that the internal product review recommended release. According to that reporting, the plan was to keep iterating and to disclose that the tool could make errors. The review also reportedly concluded that further small changes to the prompts were unlikely to help much: “Further small prompt changes are unlikely to meaningfully improve outcomes without introducing more risk.” This language is attributed to the internal review as reported by Semafor. It is not an independently published Post statement.

The dispute therefore turns on two different questions. The product team treated the feature as an experiment that could be improved in public under a beta label. Newsroom staff treated the same output as journalism that readers could mistake for the Post’s reporting. The reporting does not show that either side settled that disagreement.

Semafor quoted Karen Pensiero, the Post’s head of standards, describing the errors as “frustrating for all of us.” That remark was reported from an internal message. It was not a formal public announcement from the Post.

A Post editor’s Slack message, also reported by Semafor, was harsher: “It is truly astonishing that this was allowed to go forward at all,” and “If we were serious we would pull this tool immediately.” The message is reported as internal, and its wording is preserved here as quoted.
A December 12, 2025 report by Status corroborated the newsroom reaction. Part of that page is paywalled, so its account is limited to what was readable.

What remains unresolved as of October 8, 2026
The reporting from December 2025 is the most detailed public record available. It does not answer the following questions:
- Whether Your Personal Podcast is still available in the Post app.
- Whether the topic, host and duration options, and the eight-minute beta limit, remain in place.
- Whether the error disclosure or other safeguards were changed after the December reporting.
- Whether the Post has issued a later public explanation of the feature or the internal review.
The Post’s current podcast listings show other programming. They do not answer the feature-status question, and nothing in them indicates that the errors reported in December affected other shows.
