Zsa Zsa Gabor is commonly said to have married nine times, but that total includes a ceremony with Felipe de Alba that lasted about one day and was later annulled or treated as invalid. Some accounts therefore count eight valid marriages. Her final husband was Frédéric von Anhalt, whom she married in 1986 and remained married to until her death in 2016.
Why accounts give different marriage totals
The difference comes down to whether the brief 1982 ceremony with Mexican actor Felipe de Alba is counted. TIME’s 2016 obituary describes Gabor’s total as eight or nine, depending on whether that annulled marriage is included. The Los Angeles Times obituary says the union was declared invalid because Gabor’s divorce from her seventh husband, Michael O’Hara, was reportedly not final. TIME and the Los Angeles Times explain the distinction.
So, “nine times” is a familiar count of ceremonies or unions when de Alba is included; eight is the count used by accounts that exclude that invalidated union. The number is not evidence that each relationship had the same legal status.

The de Alba ceremony lasted one day, according to TIME, and was annulled. The list records the chronology commonly used in retrospective accounts; it should not be read as saying every union was legally equivalent. TIME’s obituary provides the ordered list and the one-day detail.
What Gabor said about having “three husbands”
In a July 28, 1986 Los Angeles Times report about her upcoming wedding to von Anhalt, Gabor framed her history differently from the usual numerical count. She said she had “only had three husbands”—Conrad Hilton, George Sanders and her first husband, Burhan Asaf Belge—and called four other unions “only legalized love affairs.” The newspaper rendered Belge’s surname as “Belgee.” This was Gabor’s personal characterization, not a ruling on the legal status of each marriage. Who was Zsa Zsa Gabor’s last husband?
Her final husband was Frédéric von Anhalt. They married in 1986, and they were still married when Gabor died in 2016. Contemporary reports reflect the point in time at which they were written as well as the counting method. The Los Angeles Times called von Anhalt’s wedding Gabor’s eighth in July 1986, while El País also counted eight at the time of that wedding. Later obituaries could include the de Alba ceremony in a total of nine while noting that it was annulled or invalid. Los Angeles Times, July 28, 1986; El País, August 16, 1986.
