Beijing Chaoyang police said in a notice dated September 21, 2025 that he died after an accidental fall while intoxicated, that criminal suspicion had been ruled out, and that online claims of assault were rumors. The alleged torture video that circulated online has not been authenticated by any of the sources reviewed, so it should be treated as an unverified allegation, not as evidence of what happened.
What police have concluded

What Yu’s mother said
The Straits Times reported on September 22, 2025 that Yu’s mother, in a statement posted through his management team on September 16, said police had informed her of the investigation and that her son had accidentally fallen from a height after drinking. Police confirmed their findings on September 21, five days after that statement. The statement is relayed secondhand in the reporting reviewed, and its full text is not reproduced there. The Straits Times report also carries a headline about police detaining three women over false allegations; the reporting reviewed does not supply further detail on those detentions.
The alleged torture video
Online posts circulated purported video and audio alongside claims that Yu had been tortured before his death. The Economic Times described these as alleged clips attributed to online posts. Its reporting does not authenticate the footage.

The police notice addresses the same online environment. As summarized in the reporting reviewed, it calls claims of assault, being pushed, and mistreatment of Yu’s mother rumors. It says people fabricated and circulated false information and fabricated videos, and that police dealt with those responsible. That summary does not say which clips the notice considered fabricated, so the notice cannot be read as a ruling on the specific torture clip.
This article does not describe anyone shown in the clips as a suspect, and nothing in the reporting reviewed establishes that the footage shows Yu.

A separate fact-check: the protest clip
A later viral claim said a protest had taken place over Yu’s death. In a fact-check dated October 28, 2025, AFP found that the clip used to support the claim was AI-generated and reported no evidence that the protest happened. That finding concerns a different piece of content. It neither confirms nor refutes the alleged torture clip, and it should not be cited as if it had tested that footage.

What the reporting does not establish
- Whether the alleged torture video is genuine, who recorded it, or how it reached the internet. No original uploader or chain of custody is identified.
- The contents of the forensic report, witness records, or surveillance footage that police cite.
- Any change in official case status after the September 21, 2025 notice. The most recent reporting reviewed is dated October 28, 2025, so later developments are outside this article.
The police conclusion is clear, but it is an official account of a case whose underlying material has not been published. That limits what can be said; it is not evidence for either version.
How to judge a clip like this
The same checks apply to any viral video connected to a death:
Quick Recap
- Provenance: Is this the original file, or a repost, re-edit or clip circulating with a caption? Only the original file can be traced to its source.
- Attribution: Who made the claim, when, and on which platform? A named account with a traceable history is different from an anonymous caption.
- Independent verification: Has a forensic body, a news organization with direct access, or a fact-checker tested the footage? Viral reach and emotionally forceful audio do not verify what a clip shows.
- Identification: Has anyone credible confirmed who appears in the footage and when it was filmed?
- Access to evidence: Does the person making the claim have direct access to the case material, or are they reacting to it secondhand?
