The “Black Widow” leak that made headlines in July 2020 was an unverified rumor, not a confirmed account of the film’s plot. BGR’s Chris Smith reported that an anonymous post attributed to 4chan had circulated through Reddit, while warning readers that its claims could not be verified. Marvel later confirmed the film’s broad premise and cast, but that does not authenticate the rumor’s alleged twist or post-credit scenes.
What the 2020 Black Widow leak claimed
On July 22, 2020, BGR published Chris Smith’s report on an alleged plot leak for Black Widow. The report attributed the claims to a 4chan post relayed through Reddit. The underlying posts were not independently authenticated, and BGR explicitly said the information could not be verified. BGR’s July 2020 report is therefore evidence of what was being claimed at the time—not proof of the film’s plot.
The purported account touched on Natasha Romanoff’s history, Taskmaster, Yelena Belova, Rick Mason, and post-credit scenes. Those details should be understood as allegations in an anonymous post, not as established spoilers. The available contemporaneous report does not provide a basis for treating the purported identity or end-credit twists as confirmed.
What Marvel later established about the film
Marvel’s official synopsis says Natasha confronts the darker parts of her past when a dangerous conspiracy emerges, involving relationships she left behind before becoming an Avenger. The studio’s April 2021 announcement also identified the principal cast and said the film would arrive in theaters and on Disney+ with Premier Access on July 9, 2021. Marvel’s release announcement and synopsis establish the movie’s official premise, not the detailed claims in the earlier leak.

Marvel’s film page records the release date as July 9, 2021 and lists both Taskmaster and Rick Mason among the characters. The official film page confirms those characters belong to the released film’s material; their presence alone does not confirm the anonymous post’s claims about their roles or the ending. Marvel’s Yelena Belova character page likewise describes her Red Room training and connection to Natasha and Taskmaster, providing official character context rather than independent validation of the leak.
Why the original Phase Four framing is now dated
When Marvel announced the film on April 3, 2020, it scheduled a November 6, 2020 theatrical release and described Black Widow as the kickoff to Phase Four. That date was subsequently superseded: on April 3, 2021, Marvel announced July 9, 2021 as the release date, and its film page records that date. Marvel’s 2020 schedule announcement documents the original plan; it should not be mistaken for the date the film ultimately opened.
