The available official records here do not establish whether Paramount submitted the film or whether it appeared on the Academy’s final eligibility list, so the claim that it was ineligible cannot be confirmed from them.
Did Sonic the Hedgehog 3 miss the Oscars’ qualifying release window?
No. Paramount lists Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as released on December 20, 2024, and the Academy’s 97th Oscars qualifying period ran from January 1 through December 31, 2024. The date therefore fell within the calendar-year window. Paramount’s film listing and the Academy’s 97th Oscars announcement establish those dates, but not the film’s full category eligibility.
What did Best Picture eligibility require?
For the 97th Oscars, Best Picture had requirements beyond a qualifying release date. A film needed to meet general entry rules and the category’s theatrical, submission, and representation requirements set out in the Academy’s 97th Oscars Rule Nineteen.
Initial qualifying theatrical run
The film needed an initial one-week theatrical run in a qualifying U.S. city. The Academy identified six qualifying metropolitan areas in its 97th Oscars rules announcement.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Expanded theatrical run
Best Picture contenders also needed an expanded theatrical run of seven days in 10 of the top 50 U.S. markets. Those days could be consecutive or non-consecutive. Under the rule, qualifying non-U.S. territory releases could count for two of the 10 markets, subject to the rule’s market definition. For late-year releases, planned expansions had to be completed by January 24, 2025. Rule Nineteen is the controlling source for these details.
RAISE and representation standards
The Academy required submission of a confidential Representation and Inclusion Entry Form (RAISE), and the film had to meet two of the four Representation and Inclusion Standards. As the rule states, “Eligibility in the Best Picture category is contingent upon submission of the Representation and Inclusion Entry Form (RAISE), and the motion picture meeting the requirements of two out of the four Representation and Inclusion Standards.” The Academy’s Representation and Inclusion Standards page provides general information about the standards; the 97th Oscars rule governs this awards year.

What is known about Sonic 3’s eligibility?
The confirmed release date puts the movie inside the 2024 calendar window. The cited records do not establish whether it completed the required initial and expanded theatrical runs, submitted RAISE, met two standards, or was submitted for Best Picture consideration. They also do not establish whether the Academy placed it on the final Best Picture eligibility list.
That distinction matters: a film’s release date can satisfy one condition without proving that it met every other requirement or was entered in the category. The Academy’s Producers Branch Executive Committee resolves eligibility questions under Rule Nineteen, but the sources cited here do not provide a film-specific determination for Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

Why the categorical headline is unverified
The evidence supports a narrower conclusion than “Sonic 3 is not eligible.” The film’s date fell within the qualifying year, while its compliance with the additional Best Picture conditions and its submission status remain unverified in the cited records. The 98th Oscars announcement describes later rules and notes that a producer or distributor can opt out of Best Picture consideration, but it does not establish the film’s status for the 97th Oscars. The 98th Oscars announcement is later-year context only.
