Yes—with an important qualification. Konnan became a strongly crowd-connected WCW performer during his nWo and Wolfpac years, especially in 1998. A retrospective account says his catchphrases regularly got reactions, while WWE’s history of WCW places him in the more fan-friendly Wolfpac. That supports calling him notably over in that period, but the available evidence does not establish that he ranked among WCW’s most popular wrestlers by any measured standard.
What “over” means in this case
In wrestling, being over means drawing a meaningful audience response. That response can be positive or negative; it is not automatically proof of drawing power, merchandise sales, television ratings, or a formal popularity ranking. No Konnan-specific figure for those measures is established in the available sources.
So the most defensible version of the claim is period-specific: Konnan connected with crowds as his character developed through the nWo and Wolfpac, rather than being demonstrably one of WCW’s top stars throughout his entire run.
Why Konnan’s WCW character clicked
The nWo turn gave him a clearer role
A 2021 retrospective on WCW’s World Television Title says Konnan’s initial babyface presentation in 1996 had not yet made him a major audience favorite. Its account says he began getting over after joining the nWo in 1997. The change gave him a more distinctive character and placed him inside one of WCW’s defining storylines. Gaming Respawn’s retrospective attributes his appeal to factors including charisma, bilingual interview ability, and memorable catchphrases; that is a critic’s assessment, not a contemporary audience survey.

The Wolfpac made the crowd connection visible
WWE’s WCW history timeline dates the Wolfpac’s formation to May 4, 1998, identifying Konnan as part of Kevin Nash and Randy Savage’s group. WWE describes the Wolfpac as more fan-friendly than Hulk Hogan’s nWo Hollywood and notes that Lex Luger and Sting joined. That context helps explain the faction’s appeal and Konnan’s prominent place in it, but it does not prove that his individual reaction matched every larger star’s.
Catchphrases were a recurring hook
The same retrospective says Konnan’s catchphrases rarely failed to get a reaction in 1998. That is the clearest direct support for the idea that he was over: a recurring crowd response tied to his on-screen persona. The source does not quantify the size, consistency across arenas, or positive-versus-negative character of those reactions, so the claim should remain qualitative.

What the wider WCW moment can—and cannot—show
Konnan’s rise took place during a major period for WCW. WWE says Nitro dominated Raw for 84 consecutive weeks between May 1996 and March 1998. That speaks to WCW’s television momentum, not to Konnan’s individual popularity. Likewise, WWE reports more than 40,000 fans attended the July 6, 1998 Goldberg–Hogan event at the Georgia Dome; that attendance figure describes the event, not Konnan’s drawing power. WWE’s timeline provides both pieces of historical context.
These distinctions matter because “over” is often used as if it were a single statistic. Crowd reaction, television placement, faction prominence, ticket sales, and merchandise performance are different kinds of evidence. The sources establish Konnan’s place in a prominent faction and a retrospective account of recurring reactions, but they do not provide a Konnan-specific rating, attendance, merchandise, or crowd-response measurement.

Was he one of WCW’s most over wrestlers?
It is reasonable to describe Konnan as one of WCW’s notably over performers during the nWo/Wolfpac period, particularly in 1998. The case rests on a character that fit him better than his early WCW presentation, reported catchphrase reactions, and membership in a fan-friendly faction at a high-profile point in the company’s history.
But “one of the most over” is an interpretation, not a verified ranking. No direct contemporary quote or numerical comparison establishes that superlative, and the available material does not show that Konnan drew equally strong reactions across his whole WCW run. The evidence supports a strong, era-specific connection—not a measurable place above or alongside WCW’s biggest stars.

A note on Konnan’s wider WCW legacy
His role also connected with WCW’s use of lucha libre performers. In a WWE Classics interview, Konnan recalled bringing Mexican wrestlers to WCW in 1996 and described Rey Mysterio’s initial backstage reception. That recollection speaks to the broader transition of lucha libre talent into WCW; it is not evidence of Konnan’s own audience popularity.
