Was Kevin James’ Salary the Reason The King of Queens Ended?

No reliable contemporary reporting cited here says Kevin James’ salary caused The King of Queens to end. Reports from 2007 describe James stepping down as his film career was developing and the sitcom concluding after nine seasons. They do not give his salary or document a pay dispute. The careful answer is that the salary theory is unsubstantiated—not that private compensation discussions can be ruled out.

What was reported when the series ended?

In an Associated Press interview published by CBS News on April 9, 2007, James said the series would end the following month. Reflecting on the run, he said, “You know, when they tapped us on the shoulder and we looked up, it was nine years later.” He also recalled that the ending became real to him while filming the final episode: “It didn’t really hit me until shooting the last episode, I gotta be honest.” The interview discusses the end of the show, not a salary explanation. Read the Associated Press interview at CBS News.

An April 4, 2007 Associated Press report by Janice Rhoshalle Littlejohn described James as stepping down while a film career was looming. James was quoted as saying, “All good things must end and unfortunately this is.” The account characterized the sitcom as a consistent CBS success and noted its strength in syndication; it did not report that CBS ended the show over his pay. Read the Associated Press report in The Spokesman-Review.

Is there evidence that his salary was “insane”?

The contemporary coverage cited above provides no salary amount and no report that James demanded a particular sum, that negotiations broke down, or that CBS made a cancellation decision because of his compensation. Without an attributable, reliable source for a specific figure or causal claim, salary numbers repeated in celebrity-pay roundups should not be treated as established facts.

That is a limit on what the reporting establishes, not proof that compensation was never discussed privately. The available accounts support a series ending and James moving on; they do not substantiate salary as the reason.

Why the ratings and finale context do not prove a salary theory

The 2007 Associated Press report put the show’s audience at 8.7 million viewers per week and described its syndication performance as strong. That is a contemporary figure reported by the AP, not a complete ratings history. It also cannot establish the network’s private rationale for ending the series.

Rank #2

A May 14, 2007 TV Guide feature covered the finale after nine seasons. James said the network had let the show do its own thing; that comment concerns the show’s working relationship with the network, not his salary or the reason for the ending. Read TV Guide’s finale-era feature.

Was it canceled, or did it end?

“Canceled” is common shorthand, but the contemporaneous accounts cited here describe the show’s conclusion after nine seasons and James stepping down as his film career developed. They do not establish that CBS abruptly canceled the sitcom because of a salary dispute. Sony’s official catalog lists the series as spanning 1998–2007.
