But the available sources do not verify that she was the first Playmate of the Month “since Hugh Hefner’s death,” or establish what “first” means in that claim. Hefner died on September 27, 2017, and the distinction between selecting a model and publishing her issue matters.
What can be established about the headline?
The headline’s wording points to someone named Playmate of the Month after Hefner died, but the original article behind it has not been identified. A historical reference page lists Inés Rau as Miss November 2017 and describes her as the first openly transgender Playmate. It does not connect Rau to this exact headline or substantiate the “first since” chronology. Historical Playmate reference

Hefner died on September 27, 2017, aged 91, according to The Washington Post’s obituary. That obituary also describes the Playmate centerfold as a defining feature of Playboy, established beginning in 1955. The Washington Post obituary
Why “first since” is not yet a settled fact
The phrase could mean the first model selected after Hefner’s death, the first announced afterward, or the first whose issue appeared afterward. Those dates need not be the same. The historical reference says Hefner personally selected Playmates until shortly before his death, making the last selection he made different from the later publication date of an issue. The available sources do not say which meaning the headline intended.

Accordingly, Rau’s listing as Miss November 2017 is a lead, not proof that she was the first post-death Playmate. Establishing the claim would require the original publisher’s article or a primary Playboy record that identifies the selection and issue chronology.

The same reference page says the first model formally called a Playmate of the Month was Margie Harrison, Miss January 1954. E!, however, reports Hefner saying of Marilyn Monroe in a 2008 interview, “Very first playmate of the month, very first cover.” The quote concerns Monroe and Playboy’s first issue. These accounts use or report the designation differently, so they should not be treated as one uncontested account of the feature’s beginning. E!’s report on Hefner’s statement
Rank #2
The reference page also says the final Playmate of the Month appeared digitally in December 2020. That provides an endpoint for the feature as described by that secondary source, but it does not resolve who was first after Hefner’s death.
