In 2025, Wood said the cast’s fees were “not massive,” explained that the actors committed to all three films before knowing whether they would succeed, and disputed a reported $250,000 figure attributed to him. The available reporting supports calling his pay modest relative to the franchise’s later scale; it does not establish his exact compensation or prove an objective standard for whether he was underpaid.
What Elijah Wood said about his pay
At the 2025 Texas Film Awards, Wood discussed the trilogy in an interview with Business Insider, as reported by The Guardian, The Independent and Variety. He said the cast was not paid “massive” fees and described taking on the films as a “real gamble.”
Wood’s explanation centered on how the commitment was structured: the actors signed on for all three films before the first had proved successful. “Because we weren’t making one movie and then renegotiating a contract for the next, it wasn’t the sort of lucrative scenario that you could sort of rest easy for the rest of your life,” he told Business Insider, according to The Guardian.
Was the reported $250,000 figure his salary?
No confirmed source in the coverage establishes that amount as Wood’s pay. The reports say he disputed the circulating $250,000 figure and declined to supply an alternative, responding, “It doesn’t matter.” It should therefore be treated as a disputed report, not as his verified salary.

The reporting does not provide Wood’s contract, his total compensation, or verified details of residuals or backend participation. His salary for the films and any other compensation cannot be calculated from the public statements summarized in these reports.
Why the trilogy’s success does not settle the question
The Guardian reported that the trilogy earned $2.96 billion worldwide at the box office and had a reported budget of $281 million. Those figures give a sense of the scale the films ultimately reached, but box-office gross is not profit: it does not, by itself, show what the films earned after costs or how revenue was allocated. Nor does a franchise’s eventual success establish what any actor was contractually entitled to receive.
The trilogy was released from 2001 to 2003, and the reports describe the films as made back-to-back. The cast could not use one installment’s eventual box-office performance to renegotiate for the next under the reported arrangement. The same structure that committed actors to a major three-film production also limited the opportunity to reset their fees as the franchise’s prospects became clearer.
What other cast members have said about their pay
Other actors’ reported figures offer context, but they are not evidence of Wood’s compensation. The Guardian and The Independent reported that Orlando Bloom said he received $175,000 for all three films, while Sean Astin said he received $250,000 for the trilogy. These are statements attributed to those actors in coverage of remarks they made in earlier years, not verified comparisons of each performer’s full compensation.

| Sean Astin | $250,000 | The trilogy, as reported by The Guardian and The Independent. |
How to assess whether he was underpaid
“Underpaid” depends on the comparison being made. If it means Wood later earned less than the trilogy’s enormous box-office gross might lead viewers to assume, his comments and the reported deal structure make the contrast understandable. If it means his contract was unfair compared with a standard rate, the reporting does not establish that: it supplies neither his confirmed total compensation nor the full terms needed to judge it.
Wood also emphasized the personal and career value of participating. He said the films became part of the cast’s lives “for ever,” called the experience an honour, and described it as among the best experiences of his life. He called Cate Blanchett’s “free sandwiches” remark “hilarious” and said comments about the pay were not made with “any kind of ire.” That perspective does not change what he said about the fees; it shows that he can value the experience while acknowledging that the deal was not a life-changing payday.
