What was Concord?
Concord was a paid, 5v5, character-driven first-person multiplayer shooter set in a science-fiction galaxy. PlayStation and developer Firewalk announced it for PS5 and PC, with a global launch date of August 23, 2024. The game required an internet connection and a PlayStation Network account; PS5 play also required a paid PlayStation Plus membership. PlayStation’s launch announcement outlined those requirements.
Firewalk’s original plan was to sell the game and support it with free post-launch updates and optional cosmetic purchases. Before shutdown, the studio had planned Season 1 for October 2024 and said it was working toward a second season in January 2025. These were pre-launch plans, not content that players ultimately received. Firewalk’s pre-launch overview described that model.
Why did Concord shut down?
On September 3, 2024, Firewalk game director Ryan Ellis announced that Concord would go offline beginning September 6, sales would stop immediately, and purchasers on PS5 and PC would receive full refunds. People who bought physical copies from other retailers were directed to request refunds through those retailers. Ellis wrote that the studio had decided to take the game offline and “explore options, including those that will better reach our players.” The shutdown announcement did not specify what those options would be.

One reported indicator of the difficult PC launch was a peak of 697 concurrent players on Steam on launch day, according to SteamDB figures reported by WIRED. That is a Steam concurrent-player count—not a count of sales, total players, or participation across PS5 and PC. Sony did not disclose total sales in the period WIRED covered.
What did Mat Piscatella mean by “unsalvageable”?
Piscatella, a U.S. market expert, offered a conditional assessment in comments to IGN reported by PlayStation LifeStyle. He said, “On the one hand, the game and the IP were just so soundly rejected that one may think it unsalvageable.” But he immediately raised the possibility of a different outcome: because few people knew Concord, “perhaps it could be brought back with a different model and a significant refresh.” The report presents both sides of his view.

In other words, “unsalvageable” described how Piscatella thought the rejection could be interpreted; it was not a definitive prediction that revival was impossible. His counterpoint was also a possibility, not confirmation that Sony or Firewalk had chosen to bring the game back.
Can Concord come back as a free-to-play game?
A free-to-play version is one conceivable interpretation of a “different model,” but PlayStation’s statement did not name that model or announce a relaunch. It said only that the company would explore options. There is no confirmation in the cited statements that Concord returned, that a free-to-play version was in development, or that a revival was underway.

A relaunch would also need to do more than remove the upfront price. The original offer paired a paid game with planned free seasonal updates and optional cosmetics, while established free-to-play shooters already had audiences and social groups. WIRED quoted games industry analyst Simon Carless on the switching challenge: “These are the kind of titles that players socialize with their friends in, and they’re often not motivated to switch games.” That is useful context for the challenge of attracting players, not proof of the specific reason Concord failed.
A hypothetical return would therefore have to make the game’s offer distinctive enough to attract people unfamiliar with it, provide a substantial refresh, and sustain an online service against established competitors. The cited reporting offers no tested relaunch outcome or evidence that those hurdles were overcome.

What is known—and what is not
- Known: Concord was a paid PS5 and PC online shooter launched August 23, 2024.
- Known: PlayStation announced the shutdown on September 3 and took the game offline beginning September 6, 2024, with refunds for purchasers.
- Known: Piscatella described the game and IP as potentially unsalvageable while also suggesting that a different model and significant refresh might allow a return.
- Not announced: A free-to-play relaunch, a revival plan, or a return date.
Another analyst, Omdia’s Liam Deane, told WIRED that it was “unprecedented for a game of this scale to be shut down so quickly” and said the launch was so bad “there was clearly no way back.” Those were Deane’s opinions about the situation, not an official statement about Concord’s future.
