Was Anu Singh “in Her Senses” When Joe Cinque Died? What the Film Can—and Can’t—Tell Us

Joe Cinque’s Consolation revisits the 1997 case, but neither the film nor the reported verdict establishes a definitive clinical answer to whether Anu Singh was “in her senses.”

Joe Cinque’s Consolation raises the question of whether Anu Singh was “in her senses,” but it cannot establish her clinical state. A film is not a psychiatric assessment or a court record. The cited account reports that Singh was found guilty of manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility; that legal outcome is not, by itself, a definitive clinical answer.

What does “in her senses” mean?

The phrase can refer to ordinary awareness, legal responsibility, or a person’s clinical mental state. Those are different questions. The available account supports discussion of the film’s framing and reports a verdict, but it does not establish a retrospective diagnosis of Singh or explain the court’s psychiatric evidence and reasoning.

In particular, diminished responsibility should not be treated as a synonym for insanity. The cited essay reports the basis of the manslaughter finding, but it is commentary rather than the judgment itself. Without the court’s reasons and underlying evidence, it would be misleading to turn that brief description into a broader legal or medical conclusion.

What happened in the case, according to the cited account?

Film analyst Dirk de Bruyn’s essay describes Joe Cinque as Singh’s boyfriend and says he died in Canberra in October 1997 after being given Rohypnol and heroin. The essay reports that Singh was found guilty of manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility and that her friend, Rao, was acquitted. Because this account is not a court record, those legal details should be understood as the essay’s report, not a substitute for the judgment.

What film reopens the case?

Joe Cinque’s Consolation is a 2016 Australian narrative feature directed by Sotiris Dounoukos, who co-wrote it with Matt Rubinstein. Screen Australia lists its runtime as 110 minutes and records screenings at the Toronto International Film Festival and Melbourne International Film Festival in 2016. Its record also identifies Helen Garner as the writer of the original material. Screen Australia’s film listing documents those production and historical screening details; it does not establish where the film is available to watch now.

What does the film emphasize—and what does it leave to the book?

The film is based on Garner’s 2004 nonfiction book, Joe Cinque’s Consolation: A True Story of Death, Grief and the Law. De Bruyn’s essay describes the adaptation as concentrating on the events leading to Cinque’s death and the actions and inaction of people around the couple. In the essay’s broad comparison, Garner’s book also examines the trial and its consequences. This is an account of the adaptation’s focus, not an exhaustive comparison of every scene or argument in the two works.

For readers deciding where to go next, the distinction is useful: the feature offers a dramatic reconstruction of events, while Garner’s nonfiction account extends into the trial and aftermath. The book is the natural next source for that broader treatment; the film’s scenes should not be used as evidence of what a witness knew or what anyone was legally required to do.

Does the film answer who was responsible?

De Bruyn reads the film as prompting viewers to consider Singh’s conduct, the people around her, and the danger they were told about. In that interpretation, the film makes the audience weigh culpability and witnessing rather than supplying a tidy verdict on what everyone should have done. That is a critical reading of a drama—not a factual finding about each attendee’s knowledge, nor a ruling on legal responsibility.

The most careful answer to the title question is therefore limited: the reported verdict concerns legal responsibility under a diminished-responsibility finding; it does not settle, in clinical terms, whether Singh was “in her senses.” The film can reopen difficult questions about the case, but it cannot resolve them as a diagnosis or replace the court record.
