No documentary about ancient Egyptian civilization has been identified in the available sources as having been banned in 1922. The claim remains unverified: no film title, country, or censor is specified. A possible source of confusion is a separate 1924 dispute over work at Tutankhamun’s tomb, which concerned excavation—not film censorship.
What is known about the alleged 1922 ban?
The claim that an ancient Egyptian documentary was banned in 1922 is not substantiated by the sources located. They do not identify a film, a censor, a jurisdiction, or a record of a ban. That does not prove that no obscure or locally titled film existed; it means there is not enough evidence to confirm the claim or name a documentary.

The distinction matters because “banned” could refer to different things: a film prohibited from screening, restrictions on access to an archaeological site, or a halt to excavation work. Evidence for one would not establish another.
Could the claim refer to the 1924 Tutankhamun excavation dispute?
A scholarly study by José das Candeias Sales and Susana Mota, “Tutankhamun in Portugal: Reports in the Portuguese Press (1922–1939)”, discusses press coverage of ancient Egypt and a separate 1924 disagreement between archaeologist Howard Carter and Egyptian authorities about continuing work at Tutankhamun’s tomb after Lord Carnarvon’s death. Work was suspended while the parties negotiated, and the study says the dispute was overcome and Carter led the work to its conclusion.

This episode is not evidence that a documentary was banned in 1922. It concerns excavation, took place in 1924, and is distinct from censorship of a film.

A reliable identification would need to connect a particular film to a documented restriction. The most useful details are:
Rank #2
- Film identity: original or alternate title, production company, director, or a surviving catalogue entry.
- Date and jurisdiction: whether 1922 refers to production, release, or the alleged ban, and the country or territory where screenings were restricted.
- Evidence of censorship: a contemporary censor’s record, official notice, newspaper report, or reputable film-history study that identifies the restriction and its reason.
The Cairo Governorate’s Egyptian Museum overview provides background on the museum and its ancient Egyptian collections, but it does not document a film ban. Without identifying details and a source for the restriction, the documentary remains unknown.
