But the 2002 film does not tell viewers that: the answer arrives in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. Resident Evil: Extinction had already shown Umbrella making and testing other Alice clones, a separate plot point that can make the timeline confusing.
What the movies ultimately reveal
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter reveals that the protagonist Alice is a clone of Alicia Marcus. CAPCOM’s franchise recap identifies the film as the one that resolves the mysteries of who or what Alice is.
That makes “always” accurate in retrospect: the character viewers followed from the first film is ultimately identified as a clone. It does not mean the first film explicitly establishes her origin, or that viewers were meant to know it from the outset.
How Alice’s identity unfolds across the films
Resident Evil (2002): a mystery, not an answer
Alice wakes at the Hive without her memory or a clear sense of her identity. The film leaves her past unexplained; it does not disclose that she is a clone.

Resident Evil: Extinction (2007): Umbrella’s clone experiments
The opening appears to replay the first film’s laser-corridor sequence, but producer Jeremy Bolt explained that the Alice in that scene is a clone being tested. Umbrella is producing and evaluating multiple copies in recreated scenarios, seeking one that will obey it. Rotten Tomatoes’ set-visit report records Bolt and Milla Jovovich discussing the experiments.
Those test subjects establish that Umbrella is making Alice clones; they are not the reveal about the protagonist’s own origin. The Final Chapter later supplies that answer by identifying Alice as a clone of Alicia Marcus.
Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016; released in the US in 2017): the identity reveal
The finale connects Alice’s identity to Alicia Marcus and resolves the question the earlier films left open. The film’s 2016 release date and 2017 US release date refer to different release timing, not separate versions of the story.
Did the filmmakers plan the reveal from the beginning?
Director and writer Paul W. S. Anderson said in a 2016 interview that he had wanted Alice to return to the Hive and discover who she really was. He also described saving ideas for the final installment, including “the real identity of Alice’s character, what her real story is, her relationship between Umbrella Corporation.” GIGAZINE’s interview documents those comments.

- In San Francisco, Jill Valentine is dealing with a zombie outbreak, Leon Kennedy is tracking a kidnapped DARPA scientist and Claire Redfield is investigating a monstrous fish. Joined by Chris Redfield and Rebecca Chambers, they discover the trail of clues from their separate cases all converge on Alcatraz Island, where a new evil awaits their arrival.
That supports the idea that Anderson intended the identity mystery to pay off in the finale. It does not establish that every detail of the clone reveal was fully fixed during production of the 2002 film. The distinction is useful: the finished continuity answers the question, while the first film leaves it unresolved.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which Resident Evil continuity does this apply to?
This answer concerns the six live-action films directed and written by Anderson, not every Resident Evil adaptation. Movie Alice is an original character created for the film series; she is not a character carried over from Capcom’s game continuity. The games and films have separate stories, so the movie reveal should not be treated as an explanation of a game character’s identity.
