Aleister Black’s second WWE stint lasted about a year, and he later described the experience as a “dud,” according to a September 2026 report. That supports calling the return disappointing in hindsight—but as Black’s assessment, not a proven consensus among fans. WWE introduced him with a dramatic return, while the documented timeline ends with his release in April 2026.
Why expectations for Black’s return were high
Black had already built a distinctive record in WWE before leaving. WWE’s official profile lists him as an NXT Champion and a 2019 Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic winner. It also says he went undefeated in NXT singles competition for more than a year before winning the NXT Championship at TakeOver: New Orleans.
Those accomplishments help explain why his return could carry expectations of a prominent role. They do not, by themselves, establish what WWE intended for his second run or guarantee that he would receive a particular place on the main roster.
What happened after he returned?
WWE says Black returned in April 2025 by attacking The Miz, framing the moment with the line that “nothing has changed.” That was WWE’s promotional presentation of his comeback, rather than an independent assessment of what followed.

WWE later announced his release. A retrospective account from Wrestling-World dates his return to April 25, 2025, and his release to April 24, 2026—nearly a year later. WWE’s release announcement confirms the outcome; the precise paired dates come from Wrestling-World.
The short span between the high-profile comeback and release is the clearest documented reason to see the second chapter as an unfulfilled return. The available reporting does not provide a complete match record, screen-time figures, or enough detail to measure how much of the run was devoted to any particular storyline.

How Black explained his decision to return
In an interview reported by F4WOnline on August 1, 2025, Black described his choice as a “calculated business decision,” made after hearing what each promotion wanted him to do. He also said he loved his time in AEW, singling out a cage match with Adam Copeland as one of the most enjoyable experiences of his wrestling career. His account complicates any simple explanation that he returned because he disliked AEW.
That interview came several months into his WWE stint, before the release. It describes how he weighed the opportunity at the time; it does not establish what WWE ultimately delivered or why the run ended.

Why Black later called the year a “dud”
A September 2026 TPWW report attributes the description “dud year” to Black’s retrospective comments and says he was frustrated that the outcome fell short of what he said had been promised. This is Black’s perspective as reported by TPWW, not an independently verified account of conversations with WWE. The available material does not establish WWE’s response or independently confirm the specific promises he described.
Read together, the evidence supports a measured conclusion: Black returned with a major WWE platform and a record that gave fans reason to hope for a substantial second chapter, but he was released roughly a year later and subsequently characterized that year as a disappointment. That is a credible account of why the return fell short for him. It is not enough to claim that every fan was disappointed, to identify a single cause for his release, or to treat the headline’s “history shows” as an objective rule about WWE returns.
