Its opening states, “This film uses only their memories.” That rule gives the film an unusually close point of view—and a clear limit: firsthand recollections shape this reconstruction, but do not make it an omniscient or independently verified account.
What is Warfare about?
Directed by Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland, Warfare reconstructs a surveillance mission in Ramadi that was discovered and came under attack. The story follows the platoon through the violence and evacuation that followed, largely within a residential setting. A24 identifies the film as a 2025 release and lists DNA Films and A24 as production companies; its synopsis describes the mission as retold through participants’ memories. A24’s film page gives its release date as April 9, 2025.
This is a focused account of one event, not a survey of the Iraq War. Its tight scope is both the source of its intensity and a boundary on what it can explain.
Is Warfare based on a true story?
Yes. The film is based on a 2006 mission in Ramadi, and Mendoza—its co-director and a former Navy SEAL—participated in the event. The Associated Press reported that the filmmakers built the film from firsthand accounts and avoided adding material beyond those accounts. The AP also reported the film’s opening line: “This film uses only their memories.” The Associated Press’s report describes the remembered event and the filmmaking approach.

Mendoza explained the constraint to The Guardian: “We wanted to make a really honest film, so if it didn’t exist in someone’s memory, it did not go into the story.” His April 13, 2025 interview makes clear that memory was a writing rule, not merely a promotional description.
That distinction matters. A participant’s memory is firsthand testimony, but memory can be partial—particularly around traumatic events. The method tells viewers where the story comes from; it cannot establish that every detail is complete, nor that the film includes every perspective. Warfare is best understood as a dramatized reconstruction shaped by recollection, selection and staging, not as proof that the camera has captured the whole event.

How does the memory-based approach shape the film?
A restricted point of view
The film’s perspective stays close to the people in the platoon and to what they could perceive under pressure. That makes uncertainty part of the experience: information is limited, communication is interrupted, and danger is encountered at close range rather than explained from a safe distance. The viewer is not given the freedom of an all-knowing narrator who can fill every gap.
This focus also raises a necessary question about the people inside the house. The setting is a family home, but the evidence about the film’s method centers on the service members’ memories. A viewer can ask what the platoon understands about the Iraqi family and what remains beyond its field of knowledge. The film’s firsthand basis does not, by itself, mean that it speaks for the family or supplies their account.

Experience is not the same as context
Garland told RogerEbert.com that he wanted to make a war film that treated war as accurately as possible. The interview with Garland and Mendoza discusses the aim and the real-time approach. That intention is meaningful, but realism is not a single quality that settles questions of historical completeness. The film can convey what combat felt like to participants while leaving political history, the surrounding Iraqi community and the longer aftermath outside its frame.
How do confinement, time and sound create tension?
The action unfolds with near-real-time momentum in and around a Ramadi apartment building. Instead of cutting away to a broad historical overview, the film keeps attention on a small group in a confined space. Physical vulnerability, restricted movement and broken communication become dramatic facts: the pressure comes not just from incoming danger, but from the difficulty of understanding what is happening and coordinating a response.

The cast’s preparation helps explain the emphasis on physical behavior without proving historical accuracy. The Guardian reported that Mendoza led the actors through a three-and-a-half-week boot camp. Its April 18, 2025 cast interview places the action in a Ramadi apartment building and describes that preparation. Rehearsal can support convincing movement and group dynamics; it is not independent verification of the events depicted.
A contemporaneous review reported a 95-minute runtime and singled out the sound design’s intensity. Those are the reviewer’s observations, rather than an official technical specification or a measured production claim. The April 13, 2025 review discusses both. In the film’s confined perspective, noise and interrupted communication can make sound function as more than atmosphere: they shape how much the characters—and the audience—can register at any moment.

What works, and what the film leaves unresolved
Its force comes from proximity
Warfare makes the limits of a combatant’s immediate perspective part of its form. Confinement, duration and sensory pressure narrow the viewer’s attention, making the experience less like a conventional account of a military operation and more like being held inside one unfolding crisis. Mendoza’s participation and the memory-based rule give the project a specific firsthand foundation.
Its narrowness is also a limitation
The same focus leaves larger questions largely beyond the film’s scope: the political history of the Iraq War, the lives of the surrounding Iraqi community and what followed for those involved. These are not proof that the reconstruction is false; they are questions about what a tightly bounded platoon perspective can—and cannot—show. The film is most persuasive when judged as an intense account of remembered experience, not a definitive history of Ramadi or the war.
Who directed Warfare, and did Ray Mendoza draw on his own experience?
Ray Mendoza and Alex Garland co-directed the film. Mendoza, a former Navy SEAL, participated in the 2006 event on which it is based and brought that experience into a project built from participants’ recollections. Garland’s stated aim was to treat war as accurately as possible, while Mendoza described a rule of not including material absent from someone’s memory. Together, those facts explain the film’s point of departure without making its dramatization a complete or neutral record.
