It is less rewarding if you need a fresh story or well-developed characters. Its set pieces are the strongest part of the package, and its plot is the familiar part.
This assessment rests on the film’s official Netflix listing, production remarks that director Patrick Hughes has made in interviews, and the critical reception collected on Rotten Tomatoes as of October 8, 2026. It does not rest on a personal viewing log, so each judgment is attributed to the person or outlet that made it.

The premise, before any late-film turns
The film begins during the final stage of U.S. Army Ranger selection. An elite team’s training exercise becomes a fight for survival against an otherworldly killing machine. This review does not discuss the film’s later reveals, which Netflix’s own explainer covers in detail if you want them.
Who should press play
The film’s appeal depends on which elements you prioritize. The table below sorts viewers by the three factors that most affect the experience.

The action: practical-feeling, with visual effects
Hughes has described the production as built on real locations and physical work. In a GamesRadar+ interview, he said: “Obviously, we have a visual effects VFX component to the film, but everything else was just 100% real, which meant it was real world locations in the real world wilderness, with real world actors doing real world stunts… we had a lot of gags on set where we’d be knocking trees over in camera and sort of dust machines and gravel and rocks and stuff that that interaction.”
That account is Hughes’s own description of his approach, and it is not an independent check of every shot. Visual effects are part of the film by his admission. Where the action works, it works because the performers and environment appear to be physically present, and that is the quality critics most often praise.

Alan Ritchson carries the film
Ritchson plays the soldier identified as 81. Netflix’s official listing does not reveal that character’s personal name, and the film does not supply one in the material available to this review. The supporting cast includes Dennis Quaid, Stephan James, Jai Courtney, Esai Morales, Blake Richardson, Keiynan Lonsdale, and Daniel Webber.
Morales plays Officer Torres. In an interview with Space, he said: “Playing military characters is always interesting for me. They’re all homages to a family member.”

The Rotten Tomatoes critics’ consensus describes the film as providing Ritchson “an ideal vehicle to flex his brawny charisma.” That praise is the clearest reason to watch, and it is the element most of the positive reviews point to.
Where the story falls short
The same consensus is less generous about the screenplay. It says War Machine “occasionally clanks when it comes to character depth,” while still delivering “an awesome dose of action spectacle.” The consensus is written by the aggregator, not by a named reviewer, so it reflects the overall pattern of reviews rather than one critic’s view.

Individual reviews reinforce the point. One selected review calls the film “modestly enjoyable,” while others criticize its predictability and say the screenplay “leaves much to be desired.” The gap between those responses is the main disagreement to weigh: viewers who expect the story to carry the film may find it thin, while viewers who come for the action may find the plot an acceptable frame.

The Popcornmeter score is a rating aggregate that shows how many ratings were positive, not a detailed breakdown of why viewers liked or disliked the film. Both Rotten Tomatoes scores change as new reviews and ratings arrive, so the figures in the table above are a snapshot as of October 8, 2026.
Viewing figures and what they do not show
In a March 31 interview story, Space reported nearly 40 million views in the film’s debut weekend. The story did not explain how Netflix measured those views or what period they covered, and it did not link Netflix’s underlying data. Treat the figure as a reported claim, not a verified Netflix statistic.
