Waitress: The Musical is a filmed capture of a live Broadway production, not a new movie-musical remake. Sara Bareilles’s close, emotionally direct performance as Jenna makes the stage adaptation compelling on its own terms—and sharpened my appreciation for what Adrienne Shelly and Keri Russell achieved in the 2007 film.
What this film is—and what it isn’t
The 2023 Waitress: The Musical brings a Broadway performance to the screen. It was filmed during the show’s 2021 Broadway return and premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 12, 2023. The camera and edit mediate a theatrical event; this is not a newly shot narrative remake. Tribeca’s archive identifies it as a live Broadway recording, while Playbill’s review roundup provides the production and release context.

The stage musical adapts Adrienne Shelly’s 2007 film, starring Keri Russell as Jenna. Sara Bareilles wrote the musical’s music and lyrics, Jessie Nelson wrote its book, and Bareilles plays Jenna in this filmed production. That combination makes the screen capture especially interesting: the songwriter is not only interpreting the material through music but embodying its central character. The official film site credits Bareilles and Nelson, and the Tribeca archive describes the stage work’s relationship to Shelly’s film.
Why the stage version feels intimate
Bareilles has described the production’s filming as part of a newer, closer approach to capturing theatre. In a Playbill interview, she said: “Even though we saw these wonderful filmed performances in the past, I think there has been an evolution in that medium and a more contemporary and more modern and more intimate kind of approach to trying to make these films.”

That idea of intimacy is not the same as cinematic realism. The stage production gives viewers access to faces, vocal expression and the performers’ emotional detail, while retaining the sense that the story is unfolding as theatre. The camera can guide attention toward Jenna, but it also narrows the view compared with a spectator’s freedom to take in the full stage picture. The result sits between two modes: closer than the back row, yet still shaped by a live performance and its theatrical frame.
For me, that closeness made Jenna’s inner life easy to follow, but it also made the original film’s different strengths more apparent. Shelly’s screen storytelling can use locations and cinematic framing to make Jenna’s world feel lived-in in a way a stage capture cannot replicate. These works are not competing versions of identical craft; the contrast is precisely what makes the musical’s approach revealing.

Bareilles as Jenna, and the score’s role
Bareilles brings a distinctive perspective to Jenna because she is performing the role while interpreting it as the show’s composer-lyricist. Her presence connects the songs to the character’s private experience: the music is not an interruption from the story but a theatrical route into feelings and choices that might otherwise remain interior. The stage form can make emotional shifts explicit in song, and the live performance gives those shifts an immediacy that is different from a film actor’s screen-centered work.
That does not make Bareilles a replacement for Russell. Russell’s performance belongs to Shelly’s film, with its own rhythms and screen language; Bareilles’s is a new reading shaped by music, lyrics and the conventions of musical theatre. RogerEbert.com’s review considers the filmed musical as a work in its own right, while Rotten Tomatoes’ aggregation reflects varied critical responses rather than a single settled verdict.

How the retelling increased my respect for the original
The adaptation’s intimacy led me back to the strengths of the source rather than making it feel obsolete. The musical makes Jenna’s emotional world more overt through song and the performer’s immediate presence. In turn, that emphasis helped me notice how much the 2007 film accomplishes through screen storytelling: it can let character and place carry meaning without a song announcing the feeling. The same story changes shape when it moves from film to stage, and the contrast made Shelly’s choices feel more deliberate to me.
This is why the musical’s success, for me, is not that it improves upon or replaces the original. It demonstrates how well the story can travel—and how much the original film’s specific form contributes to its effect. Playbill’s roundup gathers critics who respond differently to the material on stage and screen, and describes praise for Bareilles’s score; those are critical reactions, not a universal consensus. My own takeaway is narrower: encountering the story through Bareilles’s musical interpretation left me with greater respect for Shelly’s film and Russell’s performance.
