Playmates’ Voltron 40th anniversary release is a physical set of five robot lions—the Black, Red, Green, Blue, and Yellow Lions—that combine to form Voltron. In an April 24, 2024, Gizmodo/io9 article, writer Germain Lussier described the toy as a long-awaited personal wish come true. The product’s confirmed details here are limited to that report; its prices and Target exclusivity are historical, not verified current information.
What is included in the Voltron 40th anniversary set?
The release comprises five separate figures: the Black Lion, Red Lion, Green Lion, Blue Lion, and Yellow Lion. They combine to create Voltron. Gizmodo’s April 2024 coverage reported both individual figures and a five-pack.
What did the lions and five-pack cost in April 2024?
Germain Lussier’s April 24, 2024, Gizmodo/io9 article reported these prices at publication:
| Format | Reported price in April 2024 |
|---|---|
| Black Lion | $30 |
| Red, Green, Blue, or Yellow Lion | $20 each |
| Five-pack | $100 |
Those figures are historical reported prices, not a current price check. The report’s individual prices add up to $110 for all five lions, compared with the reported $100 five-pack price; that is a $10 difference based on the April 2024 figures, not a claim about today’s listings.

Was it exclusive to Target?
The April 2024 article described the set as exclusive to Target at the time. That does not establish present-day exclusivity, stock, or availability. Check current retailer listings before making a purchase decision.
Why did the release feel like a dream come true?
Lussier framed the release through his own history as a Voltron fan, writing, “It took 40 years, but recently one of my toy dreams came true.” That is his personal reaction, not a manufacturer promise or a claim about what every fan will feel. He also disclosed that Playmates sent io9 a set for the coverage, which he said would include unboxing, construction, and his thoughts.
