A diagram shows a situation. A video shows it unfolding. Virtual reality (VR) can place you inside it, letting you look around, move through space, and act from a particular point of view. That can change how people perceive places, bodies, risks, and other people—but immersion alone does not guarantee empathy, learning, or wiser decisions.
VR’s influence comes from several interacting mechanisms: presence (feeling “there”), embodiment (feeling that a virtual body or viewpoint is one’s own), perspective-taking, safe simulation, and spatial interaction. The effects depend on the experience’s design, the user, the comparison condition, and what happens after the headset comes off.
What “shifting perspectives” means in VR
Physical perspective changes when users can inspect an object from unusual angles or walk through a simulated place. Psychological perspective changes when an experience places users in another person’s viewpoint or gives them a virtual body. Social and cultural perspective changes when users encounter environments, histories, and communities outside daily life.
VR generally replaces or substantially blocks the physical surroundings with a computer-generated environment. Augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality layer digital content onto the physical world, while 360-degree video records an immersive scene but usually offers less interaction than a fully simulated environment. Spatial computing is the broader category that includes immersive and passthrough experiences. Apple Vision Pro combines those modes; it should not be treated as synonymous with fully isolated VR.

1. From watching to inhabiting
Traditional media keeps the audience outside the scene. VR can provide a first-person viewpoint, spatial audio, interactive objects, and a sense of physical location. Users must orient themselves, decide where to look, and often act inside the environment.
This is the difference between reading about a historic building and walking through a reconstruction while examining its structure from several viewpoints. Presence is well established in VR research, but feeling present is not the same as learning more or changing later behavior. Immersion, presence, engagement, learning, and behavior should be measured separately (Stanford Virtual Human Interaction Lab).
2. From observing another person to inhabiting their viewpoint
Perspective-taking simulations can depict stroke-related limitations, dementia, aging, displacement, or disability. They offer a designed approximation of selected sensations and constraints—not a complete reproduction of another person’s life.
Evidence is promising but mixed. A quasi-experimental study of 139 physiotherapy students reported Jefferson Scale of Empathy scores rising from 84.65 ± 8.05 before the intervention to 86.81 ± 8.11 afterward (p < 0.01) (study). In a randomized trial of 160 formal caregivers, a three-hour VR dementia intervention produced greater immediate gains in empathy and dementia attitudes than a time-matched lecture, but the advantage was not sustained at one month (trial). A separate comparison found significant pre/post empathy increases in both head-mounted VR and group-streamed video, with no noteworthy difference between formats (comparison study).

3. From passive learning to experiential learning
VR can let learners rehearse procedures, explore systems, and observe consequences in controlled conditions. Uses include medical and nursing simulation, industrial safety, flight and vehicle practice, laboratory instruction, inaccessible field trips, and spatial demonstrations in science and mathematics.
A 2025 systematic review stresses that educational outcomes depend on evidence-based instructional design and pedagogy, not immersion by itself (review). In one nursing study of 69 undergraduates, a 180-degree VR patient story produced greater neurological immersion and volunteering-related behavior than a conventional 2D film, but the result belongs to that specific design and setting (study).
A sound VR lesson includes
- A defined learning objective and orientation to the equipment.
- Manageable cognitive load, guidance, and feedback.
- A debrief connecting the simulation to real-world action.
- An assessment of knowledge or performance that does not simply measure enjoyment.
4. From treating symptoms to rehearsing recovery
Clinical VR is used in selected protocols for pain management, phantom-limb experiences, exposure therapy, rehabilitation, motor training, and patient education. Therapists can adjust pacing, stimulus intensity, and challenge while patients repeat tasks in a motivating environment (Stanford overview).

The evidence differs substantially by condition, product, population, and outcome. VR is not a universal treatment or a substitute for diagnosis and professional care. Motion-sensitive patients may need gradual acclimatization, and clinicians must screen for contraindications and monitor discomfort.
5. From abstract space to spatial understanding
Moving through a representation can make scale, depth, orientation, and relationships easier to inspect than a flat diagram. Applications include molecular and anatomical structures, architecture, machinery, geology, urban proposals, astronomy, and data networks.

Visual realism can create false confidence, however. A convincing model may still be simplified or based on incomplete data. Evaluate separately whether it is visually realistic, geometrically accurate, scientifically valid, and useful for the decision at hand.
6. From designing for users to designing with users
Architects, engineers, product teams, and planners can walk stakeholders through a proposed building or product before construction. They can test sight lines and circulation, identify accessibility problems, compare layouts, simulate lighting and crowds, and collect feedback from people who may struggle with technical drawings.
VR prototypes still require measurements, building codes, accessibility standards, physical mock-ups, and consultation with affected users. A beautiful walkthrough can conceal defects that only those checks reveal.
7. From being physically together to sharing a virtual place
Social VR lets remote participants meet as avatars in a common environment, using spatial audio, movement, and shared virtual objects. It can support meetings, classes, workshops, support groups, performances, conferences, games, and collaborative design.
Social presence is not the same as social equality or human connection. Hardware cost, discomfort, bandwidth, unfamiliar controls, disability, and moderation can exclude participants. A prospective randomized crossover study of 60 patients found that when an anesthesiologist wore Apple Vision Pro during informed consent, ratings were lower for compassion and connectedness: 4.42 versus 4.69 without the headset on the Sinclair Compassion Questionnaire; perceived eye contact and focus also declined (study). A device that increases remote presence can therefore undermine ordinary face-to-face cues.

8. From a fixed self to an adjustable identity
Avatars can alter appearance, body characteristics, movement, voice, and social presentation. They may support experimentation with identity or assistive embodiment, while also creating risks of harassment, stereotyping, unequal treatment, and privacy loss.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The Proteus effect—the possibility that representation influences behavior—is context-dependent, not a guarantee that changing an avatar changes personality. Designers should provide representation choices, moderation, accessibility options, and clear policies for gaze, hand, face, voice, and movement data.
9. From the present moment to distant places and times
VR can reconstruct remote, dangerous, inaccessible, or historically changed places for museums, journalism, education, tourism, cultural preservation, and science. The emotional power of such experiences makes provenance especially important.
Questions for any reconstruction
- Who controls the reconstruction and whose testimony or archive shaped it?
- Is uncertainty visible, or does the scene imply unsupported certainty?
- Are living communities involved?
- Does the experience preserve context rather than turn trauma into spectacle?
10. From accepting a system to testing it safely
VR can rehearse emergency response, workplace safety, disaster preparedness, public speaking, security, healthcare communication, retail service, driving, and navigation. Users can see how decisions unfold under pressure before facing a comparable situation.
Simulation fidelity is selective. A scenario may reproduce visual and spatial conditions while omitting heat, fatigue, smell, physical danger, institutional pressure, or unpredictable human behavior. VR rehearsal supplements live drills and supervised practice; it does not automatically replace them.

| Question | What current evidence indicates |
|---|---|
| Does VR increase empathy? | Some controlled studies report short-term gains, but results vary by narrative, viewpoint, comparator, and follow-up. Video can produce similar changes. |
| Does immersion improve learning? | Only when the experience is aligned with a clear objective, feedback, cognitive-load control, and assessment. |
| Do effects last? | Not necessarily. The dementia-care trial found benefits no longer sustained after one month without reinforcement. |
| Does first-person embodiment matter? | A 2025 EEG study of 24 participants found stronger ownership and different neural responses to virtual pain and pleasure in a first-person virtual-hand perspective than in a third-person view; it did not establish lasting behavior change (study). |
| Is cybersickness a minor issue? | A 2025 review of 25 educational immersive-VR studies found widely varying symptoms, with inconsistent or very low cybersickness scores in 12 studies (review). |
When VR is worth using—and when it is not
VR is most defensible when
- Spatial understanding is central.
- The real-world scenario is dangerous, expensive, remote, or difficult to repeat.
- Controlled variation and rehearsal matter.
- The experience offers something a flat screen cannot.
- Users receive guidance, debriefing, and follow-up.
Use a video, physical mock-up, live instructor, or conventional simulation when
- The goal is simple information transfer.
- The audience is large and heterogeneous.
- Visible facial cues are central to the interaction.
- Accessibility, hygiene, setup time, or motion tolerance makes headsets burdensome.
- VR adds novelty without an instructional or clinical advantage.
Design and access safeguards
- Offer stable horizons, teleportation or snap-turn controls, adjustable movement speed, comfort settings, and frequent breaks.
- Provide captions, audio description, alternative controllers, prescription-lens support, adjustable fit, and non-headset alternatives where possible.
- Disclose whether content is reconstructed, fictionalized, algorithmically generated, or based on incomplete evidence.
- Protect gaze, hand, facial, voice, body-motion, and room-geometry data; these can be unusually revealing.
- Measure observed performance or behavior, not only presence, enjoyment, or self-reported empathy.

| Apple Vision Pro | Premium spatial computing, visualization, immersive media, and Apple integration. | Cost, comfort for long sessions, group deployment, and face-to-face cue concerns. |
| HTC VIVE | PC-based VR, enterprise training, professional simulation, and installations. | More complex than a simple standalone setup. |
| PlayStation VR2 | Console gaming for PlayStation owners. | Not designed primarily for classroom or enterprise deployment. |
| Unity | Interactive VR games, training, and educational simulations. | Requires 3D development expertise for custom work. |
| Unreal Engine | High-fidelity visualization, simulation, architecture, and enterprise environments. | Often excessive for small or mainly 2D projects. |
How to judge a VR claim
- Identify whether it is fully immersive VR, 360-degree video, passthrough mixed reality, or desktop simulation.
- Check whether the outcome is presence, enjoyment, empathy, knowledge, performance, behavior, or a long-term result.
- Examine the participants, control condition, sample size, and follow-up period.
- Ask whether the experience was guided and debriefed.
- Account for hardware, setup, hygiene, discomfort, accessibility, training, and privacy costs.
- Look for observed behavior or performance rather than self-report alone.
VR’s deepest effect is not simply making digital worlds look real. It makes selected viewpoints temporarily inhabitable. The responsible question is which viewpoints are created, whose experiences they represent, what evidence supports the design, and what users do after removing the headset.
