No. The man widely shared as “Yi Long Musk” is not Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Coverage describes him as a Chinese social-media personality and an Elon Musk lookalike. “Yi Long Musk” is a nickname attached to him, not a claim that he is the Tesla chief executive. The viral clips raise a separate question. Deepfake suspicions surrounded them, but none of the reporting cited here establishes whether any particular clip is authentic or synthetic.
Who the reporting describes
Tech Times reported on a viral video and the nickname “Yi Long Musk” on December 15, 2021, and noted online questions about whether the clip was a deepfake. CnEVPost reported in May 2022 that the man was from Hebei province and posted videos imitating Musk. Across these outlets, the operative term is “lookalike.” None of the reporting presents him as Musk, as a Tesla employee, or as a confirmed impersonator.
The name is also unsettled. “Yi Long Musk” is a nickname used in headlines and social posts. Some outlets refer to him as Yilong Ma, and some coverage uses related spellings of Ma Yilong. A nickname is not an official or legal name, so quote the form that appears in the specific outlet you are describing.
Name variants in the coverage
| Name form | Where it appears | How it is presented |
|---|---|---|
| “Yi Long Musk” | Tech Times, December 15, 2021 | Viral nickname |
| “Elon Mosaic” | South China Morning Post, January 2, 2022 (only a search-result summary of the article could be reviewed) | Second nickname attached to the same lookalike |
| “Yilong Ma” | Sixth Tone, 2026 (only a search-result summary could be reviewed) | Name rendering used when revisiting his case |
| “Ma Yilong” | Related references in other coverage | Outlet and context not established in the sources reviewed |
Timeline of reported events
- November 2020: A 2026 Sixth Tone report, known here only from its search-result summary, says Yilong Ma first went viral on Douyin for his resemblance to Musk.
- December 15, 2021: Tech Times reports a viral video, the nickname “Yi Long Musk,” and online questions about whether the clip was a deepfake.
- December 20, 2021: CnEVPost reports a reply from Musk that was a joke about the lookalike story. It is not a statement about the man’s identity.
- January 2, 2022: The South China Morning Post describes a viral Chinese Musk lookalike nicknamed “Elon Mosaic” and says whether the footage is authentic remains uncertain. Only the search-result summary of this article was accessible, so the details here are limited to that summary.
- May 2022: CnEVPost reports that the man was from Hebei, that he posted videos emulating Musk, and that his Weibo account showed a community-rules ban at the time of reporting. The same report quotes Musk’s conditional reply, dated May 9, 2022.
- 2026: A Sixth Tone piece revisits Yilong Ma and reports a later appearance. Only its summary could be reviewed, so details beyond that summary are not established here.

“I’d like to meet this guy (if he is real). Hard to tell with deepfakes these days.”

The December 2021 joke
A separate reply reported by CnEVPost on December 20, 2021 reads: “Maybe I’m partly Chinese!” It responded to the lookalike story as a joke. It should not be read as a factual claim about the other man’s background or identity.
Deepfakes are a separate question
Readers often merge two issues: who the man is, and whether a given video is real. They have different answers.

- Made In Thailand
- Identity: The reporting consistently treats him as a lookalike and uses nicknames. It does not establish that he is Elon Musk.
- Individual clips: The coverage cited here does not include forensic analysis of the circulating footage, so no clip is confirmed as either a deepfake or authentic.
- Suspicion: Online questions about deepfakes were part of the reaction. They are not findings, and they should not be presented as proof that the man is fictional or that all footage is synthetic.
How to check a viral lookalike clip yourself
- Find the earliest upload. Run a reverse image search on a few keyframes with Google Lens or TinEye, then note the earliest date you can find.
- Compare the uncropped original with reposts. Heavily cropped or re-edited versions are harder to trace to their source.
- Check whether named outlets cite a specific platform post, and whether they give a date and location.
- Check the account’s status on the day you look, and record that date. Bans, deletions, and follower counts change, so older reports describe a past state.
- Treat a deepfake claim as a claim. Look for a named source that describes its method and the footage it examined.
Limits of what is established
- The South China Morning Post and Sixth Tone items were reviewed only as search-result summaries, so their details are less certain than those of the Tech Times and CnEVPost reports.
- The Weibo ban is dated to the May 2022 CnEVPost report. It is not a current status.
- No follower counts are established by the sources reviewed.
The identity answer is clear: the reporting describes a Chinese lookalike who has been nicknamed “Yi Long Musk,” not Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Whether any specific viral video is genuine remains unresolved by the coverage available.
