Freydís Eiríksdóttir is a real name in medieval Icelandic literature, not an invention of the series. She appears in the Vinland sagas as Erik the Red’s daughter and as a participant in the westward voyages. The Netflix version of her, however, is a dramatic reimagining built on a few sparse saga episodes, and its main relationships and settings have no basis in those texts.

Who Freydís is in the historical record

The only detailed accounts of Freydís come from two Icelandic prose narratives about Norse voyages to Vinland, the North American region the Norse reached around the start of the second millennium. These are The Saga of Erik the Red and The Saga of the Greenlanders. Both were written down in Iceland long after the events they describe, and scholars generally date them to the thirteenth century. That gap matters: the texts preserve a story tradition, not a contemporary record.

The sagas link Freydís to Erik the Red, the Norse settler whose son Leif is also credited with the Vinland voyages. Beyond that family connection, the sources offer few verifiable facts. Her exact birth and death dates, her precise place in Norse society, and the degree to which the saga episodes reflect real events cannot be established from independent evidence. Historians and archaeologists have not, on the available coverage, resolved Vinland’s exact modern location either, so any claim about Freydís’s physical setting should be treated as tentative.

What the two sagas say

The two Vinland sagas do not agree on Freydís. Reading them side by side is the most useful way to see that the figure is a literary construction, not a fixed biography.

Source How Freydís is portrayed Key episode
The Saga of Erik the Red A courageous woman who confronts danger She faces an attack on a Vinland expedition while pregnant, and the saga presents her as a warrior-like figure in that moment.
The Saga of the Greenlanders A more deceitful and violent figure She is involved in a deadly conflict with the expedition’s partners, Helgi and Finnbogi.

Netflix’s history coverage highlights this contrast, and it is a useful reminder that medieval storytellers could present the same person in opposing lights. The sagas tell these episodes as narrative events. They do not provide a verdict on what Freydís was like as a person.

Reading the sagas yourself

The Icelandic Saga Database publishes an English text of The Saga of Erik the Red, which is the easiest free starting point. For the full picture, a printed translation that contains both Vinland sagas lets you compare the two accounts directly. No specific edition has been verified for this article, so check that a translation is scholarly and identifies its base text before relying on it.

What the series changes

The show keeps the core connection to Erik the Red and the Vinland tradition, then builds a new character around it. Two of its major choices have no basis in the sagas:

  • The romance with Harald. Netflix’s history article states that the relationship was created for the series. Historical adviser Justin Pollard is quoted in that article describing it as something the production invented.
  • Jomsborg leadership. The series makes Freydís a pagan leader associated with Jomsborg and uses her as a symbol of the older pagan world. This is an adaptation choice, not a detail drawn from the Vinland accounts.

The practical distinction is between saga evidence and screenwriting. The family connection and the presence of Freydís in the Vinland tradition form the literary foundation. Harald, Jomsborg, and the show’s connecting plot belong to the adaptation. Creator Jeb Stuart has described the writers’ method as working from limited historical material and inventing between the gaps.

Common questions, answered from the sources

Was Freydís really Leif Eriksson’s sister?

The sagas make Leif the son of Erik the Red and Freydís his daughter, so in the saga framework they are siblings. That is a claim within the medieval texts, not an independently confirmed family relationship.

Did Freydís and Harald have a child?

Neither the sagas nor the Netflix history coverage describes such a child, because the Harald relationship is a series invention. The show’s storylines should not be read as historical fact.

Quotes from the production

Justin Pollard, historian and historical adviser to the series, said: “That’s something that we created,” referring to the Freydís–Harald relationship. Source: Netflix Tudum history article, published July 15, 2024.

Jeb Stuart, creator and showrunner, said: “You can’t do a show like Valhalla without incredible amounts of research.” Source: Netflix Tudum’s historical-accuracy feature. This is a statement about how much research went into production, not evidence that the show’s story is historically accurate.

How to describe Freydís accurately

Use calibrated language. “The saga recounts” and “the medieval tradition portrays” describe what the texts say. “The series imagines” describes the show. Avoid stating that the sagas’ dramatic scenes are confirmed events, and avoid giving Freydís dates, a birthplace, or a precise location that the sources do not establish.

No numerical claims about her life, the composition of the sagas, or the location of Vinland are supported by the sources reviewed here, so none are made in this article.

In the end, Freydís is best understood as a character who has survived in two medieval texts that disagree with each other, and who has been reshaped again for modern television.
