British cellist Nick Squires played the Prelude from Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 in a temple doorway at Stourhead after heavy rain forced a wedding to cancel its planned music. A friend filmed the performance as rain fell outside.
Who played Bach in the rain?
The musician was Nick Squires, a British cellist booked to perform with the Alani String Quartet at a wedding at the National Trust’s Stourhead estate in Wiltshire, England. The wedding took place in autumn 2018, according to Classic FM.
What piece did he perform?
Squires played the Prelude from Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1 in G major, BWV 1007, as a solo on cello. The couple had requested the piece. Scroll identifies the movement and places the performance at Stourhead.
Why was he playing during the downpour?
Unexpected heavy rain led the couple to cancel all of the planned music. Squires did not want them to miss their requested piece, so he played in the doorway of a neo-classical temple on the estate while a friend filmed him. He was sheltered in the doorway; the performance was not simply an outdoor concert in the rain.

What did the rain do to the performance?
ABC Classic reported that Squires’s cello was about 180 years old at the time. He described the damp conditions as a risk: “The acoustics were magic and the rain was just incredible,” he told ABC Classic. He also said, “It was a massive risk as my cello is 180 years old, and my fingers were sliding around as it was so damp but I think it came out pretty well!”
His sheet music was soaked, and his wet bow needed to be rehaired, according to ABC Classic’s account. Those details reflect what happened during this performance, rather than general guidance about caring for an instrument.

What happened after the video was shared?
ABC Classic reported in February 2020 that the performance brought joy to the couple and viewers. After people asked for a longer version, Squires made an hour-long loop on his YouTube channel; ABC Classic said listeners used it to sleep, relax and study.
Classic FM reported on 7 June 2023 that the clip had reached 7.3 million views — Classic FM, 2023 — after being posted on its Facebook page. That is a dated figure for one platform, not a current total across the internet.
