Video Codecs Explained: How to Choose One for Live Streaming

There is no universal best live-streaming codec. Start with platform ingest and audience playback requirements, then compare compression, processing demands, latency, containers and licensing.

Choose a live-streaming codec by checking what the platform accepts and what viewers’ devices can play; then weigh image quality, compression, encoding load, latency, container compatibility and licensing. There is no single best codec for every stream. Browser WebRTC requirements are useful context, but they do not prove that a separate platform accepts a codec for live ingest.

What a video codec does

A codec is the algorithm that encodes and decodes video. Encoding compresses the video data, trading file or transmission size against visual quality and the processing needed to create and play the stream. The result depends on the source, settings, encoder and playback environment—not the codec name alone.

Choose in this order

  1. Check ingest requirements. Confirm the live platform’s current accepted codecs and any required profile or level for your exact streaming workflow. Do not infer ingest support from browser support.
  2. Check the audience’s playback path. Verify that the target browsers, apps, devices and delivery method can decode the codec you plan to use. For browser WebRTC, MDN identifies VP8 and H.264 Constrained Baseline as required video options; support for other codecs varies by browser and implementation. MDN’s WebRTC codec guide describes that browser context.
  3. Compare quality and compression at your settings. A more efficient codec may deliver similar perceived quality with less data in some conditions, but the result depends on content and encoding settings. Do not treat a general compression claim as a guaranteed bitrate saving for your stream.
  4. Check encoder and decoder capacity. Consider whether your encoder can process the chosen codec, resolution and frame rate in real time, and whether viewers’ devices can decode it smoothly. Hardware acceleration availability can affect the practical choice.
  5. Check latency and the whole delivery chain. Real-time performance depends on more than codec selection: the encoder, protocol, platform and playback path all matter. Confirm the required latency with the actual platform and workflow rather than assuming one codec is inherently best.
  6. Confirm the container and protocol. A codec and a container are separate choices, and their combination must work through your tools and delivery path.
  7. Review licensing for your use. Licensing considerations can differ by codec, implementation and use. For commercial deployment or other consequential use, verify the applicable terms for your actual implementation.

How the main codecs compare

This comparison describes the web-media context documented by MDN. It is not a current ingest-compatibility list for any particular streaming platform.

Codec What the web references establish What to verify for live streaming
H.264 / AVC MDN describes AVC/H.264 as broadly compatible in web contexts and identifies Constrained Baseline as a mandatory WebRTC video profile. MDN also flags licensing considerations. Check the platform’s accepted profile and level, the audience’s playback support, the container and the licensing terms relevant to your implementation.
VP8 MDN identifies VP8 as a required WebRTC baseline codec and describes it as free of licensing requirements. WebRTC support does not establish that a live platform or another delivery workflow accepts VP8. Confirm the complete ingest and playback path.
VP9 MDN describes VP9 as open and royalty-free, with broad browser support. MDN says WebM is a more reliable pairing for VP9 than partial MP4 support in some environments. Check support in the specific protocol, container, platform and playback devices you use.
AV1 MDN describes AV1 as royalty-free and says it achieves higher data compression rates than VP9 and HEVC, and “as much as 50% higher rates than AVC.” This is MDN’s general comparison, not a measured live-stream result or guaranteed bitrate reduction. Confirm encoder and decoder capability, platform support, latency needs and container compatibility. Compression efficiency alone does not establish lower total cost or a better live result.
HEVC / H.265 MDN describes HEVC as designed for efficient encoding and decoding, including at high resolutions. Browser and WebRTC support varies, and MDN flags licensing considerations. Check support across the platform and audience devices, plus the licensing situation for your implementation.

MDN’s web video codec guide discusses codec characteristics and container pairings. Its codec-selection guidance also frames the choice around the requirements of the particular application.

Certified NDI technology enables low-latency gameplay streaming through OBS/vMix. Note: Encoder and decoder modes cannot run simultaneously; full NDI signals are not supported.
  • UVC to HDMI Conversion: Supporting up to 4K@30fps and 1080p@60fps decoding, ZowieBox enables flexible conversion for webcam and video workflows. As a video decoder and HDMI to IP converter, it expands connectivity options for professional video devices. Note: USB capture card functionality is not currently supported.
  • All-around Configuration Options: Control ZowieBox through its web UI on a PC, phone, or tablet. Manage connected PTZ cameras, tally light, video/audio, OSD, work mode, streams, network, and system settings. Support for VISCA over IP encoder workflows enables flexible PTZ control, while the dashboard provides video preview and system status.

What the compression claims do—and do not—tell you

MDN’s AV1 guide says its compression rates can be “as much as 50% higher” than AVC. That is a general statement in the guide, whose publication year is not stated here; it is not evidence that a particular live stream can cut bitrate by half at the same visual quality. Encoding speed, device support, latency and the entire distribution workflow still matter. Treat efficiency claims as a reason to test a candidate, not as a deployment guarantee.

Container compatibility is a separate check

The codec describes how video is encoded; the container packages media data and related information. A supported codec does not guarantee that every container or protocol will carry it successfully. MDN identifies MP4 as a standard container for H.264 and describes WebM as a more reliable pairing for VP9 and AV1 than partial MP4 support in some environments. Confirm the combination required by the encoder, ingest service and playback path.

Licensing: verify your own implementation

MDN describes VP8 as free of licensing requirements, while flagging licensing considerations for AVC/H.264 and HEVC/H.265. In its WebRTC codec documentation, MDN states: “Of the two mandatory codecs for video—VP8 and AVC/H.264—only VP8 is completely free of licensing requirements.” This is MDN’s wording, not a legal determination for every product or use. Check current terms for the codec implementation and deployment you plan to use before relying on a licensing conclusion.

A practical decision by workflow

  • You need broad web compatibility: begin by checking H.264 support in the exact ingest and playback paths, including the required profile and level. “Broadly compatible” is not a substitute for checking the platforms and devices in your audience.
  • You are building a browser WebRTC application: account for VP8 and H.264 Constrained Baseline as MDN’s required WebRTC video options; test any additional codec against your actual browsers and implementation.
  • You are considering AV1 for efficiency: confirm real-time encoding capability and audience decoding support, then evaluate the actual quality, bitrate and latency you achieve in your workflow.
  • You are considering VP9 or HEVC: verify codec, container, protocol, platform and device support together; do not assume broad browser support means compatible live ingest.
  • Your stream is commercial or otherwise sensitive to licensing: get advice or verify the applicable licensing terms for the specific codec implementation and use rather than relying on a general codec summary.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Equating WebRTC support with platform ingest support: these are separate compatibility questions. Check the platform’s current ingest specifications directly.
  • Choosing by compression figures alone: compression efficiency does not account for encoding load, decoder support, latency or licensing.
  • Assuming the codec determines the whole result: source quality, encoder settings and the playback environment affect the outcome.
  • Ignoring the container: codec and container must both fit the workflow.
  • Treating a general licensing description as legal advice: confirm current requirements for your implementation and use.
