Its title also points to a famous Jurassic Park detail—the trembling glass of water—but the available museum sources do not establish what that scene was meant to demonstrate. The best-supported connections between the film and paleontology are elsewhere: an outdated T. rex pose that shaped popular imagery, movie inventions such as Dilophosaurus’s frill and venom, and the limits of what fossils can tell us about dinosaur behavior.
What was Victoria the T. rex?
Museums Victoria presented Victoria at Melbourne Museum as an Australian-exclusive exhibition from 28 June through 20 October 2024. It has ended; it should not be confused with the museum’s current dinosaur offerings. Museums Victoria’s announcement gives the exhibition dates and describes the T. rex as its centerpiece.
The museum’s current Home of Dinosaurs page lists Dinosaur Walk, Triceratops: Fate of the Dinosaurs featuring Horridus, and Gandel Gondwana Garden. It says general admission includes the named offerings; check the live page and ticket listing for current availability and terms before planning a visit.
What does the glass of water in Jurassic Park mean?
The film’s trembling glass is a memorable image, but the museum sources available here do not explain the scene or establish what Victoria’s exhibition said about it. A rippling glass may evoke a dinosaur’s approach, but that association alone is not evidence for a particular T. rex sensory ability, behavior, or scientific finding. The detail should remain unresolved rather than be presented as a paleontological fact.

How did Jurassic Park inherit an outdated T. rex pose?
For decades, popular images showed T. rex standing upright with its tail dragging. The American Museum of Natural History says its own mount was first displayed in that posture; it is now known to be incorrect. The updated reconstruction places the animal in a more horizontal, stalking pose with its tail extended for balance. The old mount helped shape popular dinosaur imagery, including the cover of Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park.
The cover connection is documented by the American Museum of Natural History: designer Chip Kidd drew inspiration from the museum’s T. rex and a museum rendering. The museum also notes that the free-standing mount is about 45 percent real fossils. It includes bones from a specimen found in Montana in 1908, while some elements are casts from another specimen. A dramatic skeleton display is therefore a reconstruction assembled from original fossil material and casts, not necessarily one complete animal’s bones.

Which Jurassic Park dinosaur traits are unsupported?
Dilophosaurus’s frill and venom
The film gives Dilophosaurus a neck frill and the ability to spit venom. The Natural History Museum says there is no evidence for either trait. Its expert Dr Susie Maidment put the point plainly: “We don’t have any evidence that Dilophosaurus or in fact any dinosaurs were able to produce venom.” The animal did have a bony head crest, but its purpose is uncertain. The movie’s Dilophosaurus was also smaller than an adult; the museum notes that it could be interpreted as a juvenile. The Natural History Museum’s discussion of Jurassic Park dinosaur myths distinguishes these unsupported movie features from what fossils show.
T. rex as a high-speed pursuer
The original film presents T. rex as a fast pursuer. The Natural History Museum cautions that the animal was not necessarily capable of the high-speed chase depicted. Any speed estimate is an inference, not a direct observation of a living dinosaur. Fossils can inform estimates of anatomy and movement, but they do not preserve a record of a particular chase.

Hunter or scavenger?
Fossils make behavior difficult to reconstruct, and the choice between hunter and scavenger is a false one: an animal that hunted could also scavenge. Maidment describes it as “a false dichotomy that T. rex was only a hunter and not a scavenger, or only a scavenger and not a hunter.” The evidence does not justify treating either role as the animal’s exclusive way of life.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why film myths and fossil reconstructions diverge
A movie has reasons to make dinosaurs legible and dramatic: a visible frill, a venom attack, or a pursuing predator creates an instantly readable scene. Paleontology works differently. A skeleton provides evidence about bones and proportions, while details such as behavior or the purpose of a crest can remain uncertain. That distinction matters: “no evidence for” a movie trait does not prove it was impossible, just as a plausible behavioral interpretation is not a witnessed event.

Mounts and illustrations also reflect the science and conventions of their time. The change from the tail-dragging T. rex to a horizontal reconstruction shows how a once-familiar image can outlast the idea that produced it—and how a movie’s visual shorthand can carry that image to a much wider audience.
