Victoria Adams and David Beckham married at Luttrellstown Castle in County Dublin on 4 July 1999. The day’s best-known images capture two very different looks: Victoria in a champagne-colored Vera Wang gown for the ceremony, then the couple in matching purple outfits seated on custom thrones for the reception. Contemporary coverage also reported that an exclusive deal with OK! magazine kept much of the ceremony out of public view.
Where and when did Victoria and David Beckham marry?
The couple married on 4 July 1999 at Luttrellstown Castle in County Dublin, Ireland, according to the venue’s wedding history and RTÉ’s archive of its report from the day.
A report published by The Irish Times on 5 July 1999 said the vows were exchanged at 4 p.m. in a Doric temple beside a lake at Luttrellstown. That precise time and ceremony setting come from contemporary reporting.
What do the wedding photos show?
The ceremony: a champagne Vera Wang gown
Victoria wore a champagne-colored Vera Wang gown with a 20-foot train, as British Vogue reported in 2017. The venue’s retrospective account also identifies the gown and matching shoes. In photographs, the long train gives the ceremony look its defining scale and contrast with the more theatrical reception styling.

The reception: matching purple outfits and thrones
For the reception, Victoria and David changed into matching purple Antonio Berardi outfits and posed on custom thrones. British Vogue identifies the designer and throne portrait; Luttrellstown describes the color as cardinal purple. The venue’s account also lists Victoria’s diamond-and-gold tiara by Irish designer Slim Barrett, a corset by English corsetiere Mr Pearl, and David’s purple suede Manolo shoes.
Luttrellstown describes the day’s styling as Robin Hood-themed, with burgundy and dark-green accents, and calls Victoria’s later outfit a “Jessica Rabbit” evening dress. Those details come from the venue’s retrospective description, rather than the contemporary newspaper report.

How the ceremony and reception looks differ
| Part of the day | Look and setting | What the images emphasize |
|---|---|---|
| Ceremony | Victoria’s champagne-colored Vera Wang gown with a 20-foot train; reported at a lakeside Doric temple | The gown’s long train and the formal ceremony setting |
| Reception portrait | Matching cardinal-purple Antonio Berardi outfits and custom thrones | The vivid color, coordinated clothing and staged portrait pose |
The distinction matters when looking up “Beckham wedding dress” or “purple wedding outfits”: the gown belongs to the ceremony, while the matching purple looks belong to the reception portrait.
Why were so few ceremony images public?
RTÉ’s archive says much of the ceremony was kept secret because of an exclusive OK! magazine deal. That supports describing the wedding as having exclusive magazine coverage, but the available account does not establish the fee, contract terms or which specific images were licensed. It also does not show that every Beckham wedding photo now circulating was part of the magazine package.

How the couple later remembered the purple outfits
In a July 2024 anniversary feature, Vogue reported that the Beckhams recreated their purple wedding portraits for their 25th anniversary. The article quoted David asking, “What were we thinking?” when shown wedding photos in their docuseries. Victoria’s response about the outfits was: “It was fun.” These are comments about the looks, made years after the 1999 wedding.
