In Arcane Season 2, Vi and Caitlyn’s relationship moves from years of implication and fan speculation into explicit romantic development. Riot Games’ own 2024 Impact Report says their relationship “finally took the next step.” The season does not reward them with a clean romance, though. Their closeness develops amid grief, political violence, divided loyalties and a serious falling-out, and the romance is tangled up in all of them.
What the season confirms, and where the history comes from
Readers coming to the pairing late should know that the relationship was not invented for the show. Riot’s 2024 Impact Report says Caitlyn and Vi appeared in League of Legends years before Arcane. It credits cupcake references in their voice lines with sparking player speculation, and says the “CaitVi” name grew out of those fan discussions. The report puts the turning point plainly: “After more than a decade of speculation, fan-made ships, and will-they-won’t-they moments, Caitlyn and Vi’s relationship finally took the next step.”
That account matters for one reason. Fan readings of the pairing before Arcane Season 2 were interpretations, not confirmed canon. Riot’s report says “nothing was ever confirmed… until Arcane Season 2,” and the season is where the implication became text.
Where Season 2 begins
According to Netflix’s Tudum season guide, Season 2 opens after Jinx launches a stolen Hextech gemstone at Piltover’s council. In the aftermath, Vi teams up with Caitlyn and agrees to wear the Enforcer badge so she can pursue Jinx. The same guide describes Caitlyn as having abandoned hope for peace after the attack.

- Brand: League of Legends

That setup is the key to reading everything that follows. The two women are brought together by a shared goal, but not by identical loyalties or the same view of justice. Their partnership begins as a working arrangement under pressure, and the romance grows out of that pressure rather than replacing it.
Push and pull: how the performers frame the bond
Hailee Steinfeld, the voice of Vi, described the relationship in a Netflix Tudum interview during the season’s promotion. In her words, “Their relationship is so beautiful and so complex,” and she points to “a lot of push and pull between the two characters.” She says the two can agree and then come into conflict. She also says Vi relies on Caitlyn, trusts her, and sees them as a strong team.

This is a performer’s perspective, offered to explain the characters rather than to settle the story. It is useful because it describes trust and conflict as coexisting, not as stages of a relationship that one replaces the other.
The kiss: tenderness and a troubling lie
The most detailed account of the romantic scene comes from an interview with the Los Angeles Times, published August 13, 2025, with co-executive producer and scene writer Amanda Overton. Overton describes the moment this way: “We had Vi ask this impossible question at the wrong time, but she’s so vulnerable and desperate.” She frames Vi as having lost everyone she loved, and places her plea to Caitlyn inside a moment of fear and honesty.

Overton also addresses Caitlyn’s side of the exchange. Caitlyn makes a promise not to change, and Overton says, “Caitlyn lies at this moment because she thinks that’s what Vi needs to hear.” The scene therefore carries intimacy and unease at once. It is a romantic beat, but it is not a declaration that the two are fully aligned or that past damage has been repaired.

Arcane is scripted animated fiction, not a documentary. The closest documentary-style material is Netflix’s written feature “Step into ARCANE’s Immersive World with This Guide to the Making of Season Two,” published November 25, 2024, which covers the production behind the season. A 2024 Netflix feature states that both seasons were streaming on the service at that time. Streaming availability changes by country and over time, so check Netflix in your region before you watch.
