Vesper is a 2022 science-fiction survival film about a teenager navigating ecological collapse, scarcity and a society divided between the poor and the privileged. Directed by Kristina Buožytė and Bruno Samper, it mixes dystopian world-building with the dark, storybook feel of a fairy tale.
What is Vesper about?
After Earth’s ecosystem collapses, 13-year-old Vesper survives with her ailing father, Darius. When an aerial crash brings the injured Camellia into her life, Vesper offers to help her in exchange for a way to reach the Citadel. This fortified center is home to oligarchs who enjoy comfort and advanced biotechnology while people outside struggle to survive.

Vesper’s neighbor Jonas is also looking for Camellia. As their interests collide, Vesper’s resourcefulness and bio-hacking skills become central to the possibility of a different future. The premise combines an intimate survival story with questions about who controls technology and resources after environmental disaster. IFC Center’s film listing describes the film as 114 minutes; other listings give slightly different runtimes.
What kind of film is it?
Vesper is science fiction, but its atmosphere is closer to a dark fairy tale than to a conventional technology-driven adventure. The directors said they wanted a future-set story with the darkness of Perrault and Grimm. Buožytė described Vesper as stubborn and Camellia as more docile, with both characters searching for themselves and helping one another. That relationship gives the film’s bleak setting a personal counterweight. The Karlovy Vary interview discusses the filmmakers’ approach.
#1 Best Overall
The ecological disaster is also a social order: scarcity and danger define life outside the Citadel, while an oligarchic elite has access to advanced biotechnology within it. The Göteborg Film Festival program emphasizes both that divide and the story’s undercurrent of hope.
