In December 2008, Verismo Networks launched the VuNow PoD, a set-top box designed to bring YouTube and other online video to a television without a computer. The $99 launch price applied to the standard-definition VN100SD; the high-definition VN1000HD was reported at $149. Those are historical prices, not current offers.
What Verismo launched
The VuNow PoD was a physical internet-video device that connected a television to an internet connection. Verismo’s pitch was straightforward: viewers could watch YouTube and other online video directly on a TV rather than connecting a computer first. Engadget reported the product’s official launch on December 23, 2008, while noting that the announcement left details about the broader selection of online content unspecified. Models and launch prices
| Model | Reported launch price | Resolution category | What the sources establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| VN100SD | $99, reported by HotHardware in December 2008 | Standard definition | HotHardware identified this as the standard-definition model; the reviewed connectivity details for the HD unit should not be assumed to apply. |
| VN1000HD | $149, reported by HotHardware in December 2008 | High definition | HotHardware identified this as the high-definition model. PC World reviewed the Hi-Def PoD in May 2009 and described HDMI and composite outputs, Ethernet, optional Wi-Fi, and USB ports. |
HotHardware described control through a remote, with options to browse, search, and select online content. Its account of YouTube integration included access to videos, channels, and playlists through a user’s account. The report does not establish that those services remain usable today. What the Hi-Def PoD offered—and where it fell short
PC World’s May 2009 review provides a more practical picture of the high-definition model than the launch coverage. It listed YouTube, live internet TV, video podcasts, Ethernet, optional Wi-Fi, composite and HDMI outputs, and USB ports. The reviewer counted 88 streaming stations in the Live Internet TV menu at that time; that is a dated menu observation, not a current channel count. PC World’s May 2009 review

- Enjoy the show in 4K Ultra HD, with support for Dolby Vision, HDR10+, and immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- Fire TV Ambient Experience lets you display over 2,000 pieces of museum-quality art and photography.
- Some videos found through the device would not play.
- The interface was difficult to use, and its text appeared very small.
- The optional Wi-Fi adapter supported WEP security rather than WPA.
These drawbacks describe PC World’s review-era experience with the Hi-Def PoD and its configuration, not necessarily every unit or network setup. They also underline why a list of supported services did not guarantee a smooth viewing experience.
YouTube and the launch-era pitch
The product’s defining promise was moving online video from the computer screen to the living-room TV. Verismo CEO Prakash Bhalerao expressed the idea in launch-era coverage: “The television is a terrific medium for watching and sharing videos with friends or family.” That statement captures the product’s intended use; it is not evidence of present-day service compatibility.

The CinemaNow partnership announcement
In July 2009, Verismo and Sonic Solutions announced plans to add Roxio CinemaNow movies and other programming to VuNow. Engadget reported the partnership as an upcoming content addition. This documents a historical announcement, not the present availability of CinemaNow, VuNow, or any particular title. Engadget also reported that Verismo then sold the PoD through its website and Amazon; that past distribution does not establish a current listing. Engadget’s July 2009 partnership report

The $99 price belongs to the VN100SD’s reported 2008 launch. The material available here does not establish current inventory, prices, working condition, or whether YouTube, CinemaNow, or other streaming services still function on either model. Anyone considering a used unit would need to verify the exact model, its condition and connections, and whether the services they want are operational; a historical launch price is not a guide to today’s value.
