IMDb does not publish a ranked list of Vera Farmiga’s ten best movies. What it does provide is a user rating for each title on her filmography pages, and those ratings can be compared directly. Below, we group seven of her films with checked IMDb user ratings, sorted from highest to lowest score, and explain how the selection was made and what the numbers do and do not mean.
Why there is no official IMDb top ten
IMDb’s Vera Farmiga profile highlights a set of “Known For” titles, including The Departed, Up in the Air, and Orphan. That section signals visibility, not quality. It is not a ranking, and it does not order her films by score. Any “best of” list for an actor is therefore an editorial choice built on a chosen measure. This article uses IMDb user ratings as that measure and labels the selection as editorial.
The ratings are a snapshot. The figures below are the IMDb user ratings shown on each title page when checked on October 8, 2026. They will move as more votes come in, so treat them as dated values rather than permanent scores.
The seven titles with checked IMDb ratings
The table lists each film with its release year, genre as described on its IMDb page or profile, Farmiga’s credited role where the sources give one, and the IMDb user rating. Where a source does not state a detail, the cell says so.

| Film (year) | Genre | Farmiga’s role | IMDb user rating (checked Oct 8, 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Departed (2006) | Crime drama | Credit type not stated; listed among her “Known For” titles | 8.5/10 |
| Source Code (2011) | Science-fiction thriller | Colleen Goodwin | 7.5/10 |
| The Conjuring (2013) | Supernatural horror | Cast member; character not stated | 7.5/10 |
| Up in the Air (2009) | Drama with romantic and workplace elements | Alex Goran; lead or supporting status not stated | 7.4/10 |
| Orphan (2009) | Horror | Credit type not stated; listed among her “Known For” titles | 7.0/10 |
| Down to the Bone (2004) | Independent character drama | Lead character not named in the source; film follows a woman balancing a strained marriage, raising children, and a secret drug habit | 6.6/10 |
| Higher Ground (2011) | Faith-focused drama | Director and star | 6.2/10 |
Ties are listed by release year, earliest first. A tie at 7.5 does not mean two films are equal in quality; it means their user averages round to the same figure.
What each title shows about her range
The Departed (2006): the highest-rated title in this group
The Departed carries the highest user rating in this set at 8.5/10, and it appears among the titles IMDb highlights on her profile. It is a crime drama, and it is the most natural entry point for readers who want the film with the strongest audience score in this group.
Rank #2
Source Code (2011) and The Conjuring (2013): genre contrast at the same score
Source Code, a science-fiction thriller, and The Conjuring, a supernatural horror film, both sit at 7.5/10. Together they show Farmiga working in two very different genres within a few years. On the IMDb title pages, Source Code credits her as Colleen Goodwin, and The Conjuring names her in the cast.
Up in the Air (2009): the Academy Award nomination
Up in the Air scores 7.4/10 and features Farmiga as Alex Goran. IMDb’s profile notes her Academy Award nomination for this film, which is the strongest awards marker among the seven titles. The rating places it just below the two 7.5 films, so an awards-led reader and a rating-led reader will reach different conclusions about which of these to watch first.

Rank #3
- Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson
Orphan (2009): horror with a high profile
Orphan is listed among her “Known For” titles and carries a 7.0/10 rating. It is the horror title in this group that IMDb’s profile highlights most visibly, and it sits a full point below the 8.0-level entries, which makes it useful for comparison with The Conjuring at the same genre.
Down to the Bone (2004): the independent entry
Down to the Bone is the earliest film here and the lowest-budget-looking choice by genre, an independent character drama with a 6.6/10 rating. Its premise centres on a woman balancing an unhappy marriage, raising children, and a secret drug habit. It is the title to watch for a more intimate, less commercial performance.
Higher Ground (2011): the directing credit
Higher Ground ranks last in this group at 6.2/10, but it is the only title here where Farmiga is credited as director as well as star. Its story follows a woman questioning her faith. Readers interested in her work behind the camera should start here, while keeping the lower rating in mind.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to use these scores
- Compare titles only on the same measure. IMDb user ratings are not critic scores, and Rotten Tomatoes uses a separate percentage-based approach, with its own “Highest-Rated Movies” list. Do not mix the two systems in one ranking.
- Check the live IMDb page before quoting a score. The figures above are accurate for October 8, 2026 only.
- Consider the number of votes on each title page as well as the average. A high average on a film with few votes carries less weight than a similar average on a widely viewed film.
This selection covers seven films with verified IMDb ratings. We have not included a further three titles, because we could not confirm their current IMDb scores for this check, and an incomplete ranking would be misleading.
