She described feeling “high just on life,” but said she had not promised to give up alcohol forever. Her comments are a time-bound account of her experience—not a statement of her current drinking status or a claim that abstinence guarantees happiness.
Why Valerie Bertinelli said she stopped drinking
In an April 5, 2024 report on her interview with People, Bertinelli said she had used food and alcohol to soothe or avoid painful emotions. She said sadness was already present in her life and that alcohol amplified it: “Because there was so much sadness in my life, and alcohol amplified it.”
Her stated aim was to look for core happiness without relying on alcohol to change how she felt. She put it this way: “I don’t need anything to amplify my happiness right now.” Those are her descriptions of her own experience, not a diagnosis or general advice about drinking. What she meant by “high on life”
“I feel high just on life,” Bertinelli said in the interview. She also described having ginger ale in a wine glass at dinner and still feeling that the occasion was celebratory. The phrase captured how she said she felt at that time; it was not a medical claim and does not mean everyone who stops drinking will feel the same way.

Did she quit alcohol for good?
Not according to her April 2024 comments. Bertinelli said she had stepped away from alcohol but had not committed to abstaining for the rest of her life.
In a later 2024 appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show, she said she had done Dry January for several years, had barely drunk in the preceding year, and continued not drinking after January, February, and March 2024. She described herself as “pretty much never going to drink again,” while also saying, “I don’t say I’m never going to drink again.” She explained that she did not want to set herself up for failure by making a permanent promise. The official show transcript, published by Paramount Press Express, supports that distinction: she described an extended break, not a binding lifelong pledge.

How her Dry January account fits the timeline
Fox News reported that Bertinelli began Dry January in January 2023. At the time, she said she wanted to reduce sugar cravings and believed the break might help calm what she described as elevated cortisol. Those were her personal reasons and beliefs, not established medical effects or health guidance.
Her later account of continuing not to drink through several months of 2024 adds context, but neither interview establishes her drinking status today. The safest reading is that she described a substantial alcohol-free period and left open what she might choose in the future.
