Val Kilmer, the actor best known for playing Tom “Iceman” Kazansky in Top Gun, died in Los Angeles on April 1, 2025, at age 65. He was born in Los Angeles on December 31, 1959. This photo-led story follows his life in order: the Juilliard years, the film career that followed, the throat cancer diagnosis in 2014 and the changes it brought to his voice and work, his late return as Iceman, and the personal record he left behind in footage and in his memoir.

Early years and Juilliard

Kilmer began acting in high school. According to Biography.com, he went on to attend the Juilliard School. The publisher biography for his memoir describes him as the youngest actor admitted to Juilliard’s drama department at the time. That detail comes from the publisher’s account rather than from a school record, so it is best read as the claim his publisher made about him.

Theater came first. Kilmer worked on stage before he made his feature film debut in the 1984 comedy Top Secret!. He followed it with Real Genius (1985). Those two films show the range that made him a useful supporting presence for directors before he became a leading man.

The breakthrough: Iceman in Top Gun

Kilmer’s breakthrough came with Top Gun (1986), in which he played Navy pilot Tom “Iceman” Kazansky opposite Tom Cruise. Captions for photographs from the film’s production and promotion should name the film and year, since the same stills and premiere images circulate widely with inconsistent dates.

Kilmer was not eager for the part. The Associated Press obituary quotes his memoir, I’m Your Huckleberry, in which he wrote: “I didn’t want the part. I didn’t care about the film. The story didn’t interest me.” He accepted after director Tony Scott promised that the role would develop beyond the initial script. The role made him famous, but it was only the first of several turns that defined his career.

A run of transformative screen roles

After Top Gun, Kilmer’s choices were wide-ranging. Three roles show how far he went from the Iceman image.

Year Film Role Why it stands out
1986 Top Gun Tom “Iceman” Kazansky Breakthrough role; Kilmer initially did not want the part
1991 The Doors Jim Morrison Directed by Oliver Stone; a physically and vocally immersive portrait of the Doors singer
1993 Tombstone Doc Holliday A Western lead that became one of his most-cited performances
1995 Batman Forever Bruce Wayne / Batman A major studio superhero role

Jim Morrison in The Doors (1991)

Oliver Stone’s The Doors asked Kilmer to inhabit a real musician whose stage presence was already legendary. Kilmer’s performance is the one most often cited as his deepest transformation, and it is the role that shows the contrast with the cool, controlled pilot of Top Gun.

Doc Holliday in Tombstone (1993)

In Tombstone, Kilmer played the consumptive gambler and gunman Doc Holliday. The role gave him a different kind of screen persona, one built on wit and menace rather than on the physical swagger of the naval aviator.

Bruce Wayne in Batman Forever (1995)

Kilmer took on the Batman role in Batman Forever. It placed him inside a major franchise, and the film’s scale contrasted with the smaller, more character-driven projects that otherwise made up much of his work.

Later films

Kilmer later appeared in Heat and The Saint, among other films. Read together, his filmography runs from comedy and ensemble work to period drama, music biopic and blockbuster, which is why Top Gun, important as it was, does not sum him up.

The cancer diagnosis and the changed voice

In 2014, Kilmer was diagnosed with throat cancer. Biography.com summarizes the treatment as a tracheostomy, followed by chemotherapy and radiation, and then remission. ABC reports that the treatment and the tracheotomy affected his speech, and that he kept working. The sections below describe his personal experience as he and his family later described it. They are not a guide to treatment for anyone else.

Diagnosis and treatment

Kilmer’s own account, delivered through his son in the documentary Val, gives the clearest first-person record. As reported by ABC News Australia, he said: “I was recently diagnosed with throat cancer, though I healed quickly from the cancer. The extensive radiation and chemotherapy that followed treatment has left my voice impaired.”

The distinction between the cancer, its treatment and its aftereffects matters for how readers understand the story. He described the cancer as healed, but the treatment changed his voice. Those are separate facts, and his later life was shaped by the second.

Working with a changed voice

Kilmer did not stop acting. In a 2020 Good Morning America interview, republished on ABC News, he spoke about working with a tracheotomy and framed the change as a craft problem: “It’s just like any other language or dialect,” he said. “You have to figure out a way to communicate that’s no different than any other acting challenge but it’s just a very unique set of circumstances.”

That approach is central to how his later work should be read. The voice that audiences knew from Top Gun and Tombstone was no longer the instrument he had, and he treated the new one as material to work with rather than as an ending.

Recovery and the question of voice

The documentary also records the uncertainty he lived with. In his words, as quoted by ABC News Australia: “Through treatment and prayer, I slowly recovered but how much I would regain my voice remained unknown.” Biography.com reports the remission. Neither source offers a medical outcome figure for his case, and this article does not add one.

A late return as Iceman

Kilmer returned to the role of Iceman in Top Gun: Maverick (2022). According to Biography.com, it was his final film appearance. The return placed him back alongside Tom Cruise and in a film that revisited the world of the original, decades after his breakthrough. For readers, the reunion-era photographs are useful for showing how the same character looked and sounded across more than three decades, but captions should confirm the date and event for each image.

His own record: footage, documentary and memoir

Kilmer shaped how his life was told, and three sources show how.

The documentary Val (2021)

The 2021 documentary Val, directed by Leo Scott and Ting Poo, is built from more than 800 hours of footage Kilmer recorded over his life, according to ABC News Australia’s 2025 feature. The film is written by Kilmer and narrated by his son Jack, who voices his father’s words as his speech became difficult. Viewers should check current territory-specific availability before watching, because streaming and home-video rights vary by region and change over time.

The memoir I’m Your Huckleberry

Kilmer’s memoir, I’m Your Huckleberry, is his own first-person account of his roles, career and health struggles, and it includes photographs. Simon & Schuster published it in 2020. The publisher’s listing gives 320 pages and ISBN 9781982144913 for the reviewed edition; page counts can differ across formats, so check the listing for the edition you are buying. Films as the public record

The films remain the most widely seen record of his work. Set against the footage and memoir, they show the contrast between the screen persona that studios and audiences built and the private account Kilmer chose to leave.

Final chapter

Kilmer died in Los Angeles on April 1, 2025, at age 65. His daughter Mercedes confirmed his death, as reported by the Associated Press and ABC. Those reports tie his career to the personal record he had already begun to assemble, from the early theater work through Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick, to the documentary and memoir that now carry his voice.

About the photographs in this story

Where a photographer or agency is not identified, that is stated rather than guessed.
