Val Kilmer said his family was “never the same again” after his younger brother Wesley died in 1977, at age 15. The account of Wesley’s death and Kilmer’s reflections appear in the 2021 documentary Val, which also preserves some of Wesley’s artwork and footage.

What happened to Val Kilmer’s brother?

Wesley Kilmer, Val’s younger brother, died in 1977 at age 15. In reporting about Val, AOL/People described the circumstances as an epileptic seizure followed by drowning in the family hot tub. The Associated Press reported the setting as a family Jacuzzi. These are reported accounts; no further medical or legal detail is established by those reports.

Val was 17 and preparing to attend Juilliard around the time Wesley died, according to Esquire’s profile of Kilmer. That profile also recounts Kilmer’s account that Wesley had epilepsy and that treatment stopped while he was in school. It does not establish that detail as a medical explanation for Wesley’s death.

What did Val Kilmer mean by “our family was never the same again”?

In the 2021 documentary Val, Kilmer described the lasting impact of Wesley’s death by saying, “Our family was never the same again,” as quoted by AOL/People. The sentence is Kilmer’s personal reflection, not a clinical description or a claim that every relative experienced the loss in the same way.

Kilmer had also spoken about his brother in a 2002 interview with The New York Times. AOL/People relayed his recollection: “I didn’t really get back to earth until about two or three years after my brother died.” In that interview, he called Wesley a genius and said life became more difficult for their father afterward. Kilmer also described death as “an opportunity to understand about life.” These statements convey his own reflections; they do not prescribe how others should grieve.

How does the documentary Val remember Wesley?

Val draws on footage Kilmer recorded over many years and includes material made by Wesley. Speaking to The Independent about the film, Kilmer said, “My brother Wesley and my mother are both alive in the film.” He also described seeing Wesley’s footage and art within the larger story as extremely meaningful.

The film therefore presents Wesley not only through the circumstances of his death, but also through work he created and Kilmer’s memories of him. The Associated Press described Wesley as an aspiring filmmaker and reported Kilmer’s recollection that he missed his brother and remained inspired by his work.
