Val Chmerkovskiy said he was diagnosed with benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) after a hospitalization during the Dancing with the Stars Live tour. He shared the diagnosis in a March 3, 2026 update, as reported by E! News, saying he felt better and planned to perform that night.
Timeline of the hospitalization
- March 1, 2026: According to E! News, Chmerkovskiy checked into a hospital after the tour stop in Peoria, Illinois.
- March 2, 2026: E! News reported that he shared a video from his hospital bed after missing a performance. He described having vertigo for the preceding couple of days. The tour account said he was under medical care, and E! News quoted it: “He is under medical care.” Fans also sent wishes for a speedy recovery.
- March 3, 2026: He shared the BPPV diagnosis, said he felt better, and planned to perform that night. He also said he was still “a little fuzzy here and there.”
What Chmerkovskiy said about the diagnosis
In his March 3 update, as quoted by E! News, Chmerkovskiy said: “So, I got BPPV, which isn’t too bad, thank God.” The diagnosis is therefore his own public account. The coverage was based on his statements, not on medical records or a clinician’s written assessment.
He also said the condition was not related to his neck injury. That is his statement as reported; the coverage did not include independent medical confirmation of the link or its absence.
What the reports establish and what they do not
The March 2026 coverage supports a limited set of points. Each is attributed to the people who made the statements, not to independent verification.

About BPPV
BPPV is a common cause of brief, intense spinning sensations, usually triggered by changes in head position, such as rolling over in bed or tilting the head back. It is generally understood to involve small particles in the inner ear that move into the wrong area. This general description is background only; the reports above do not describe Chmerkovskiy’s symptoms in those terms. Cosmopolitan’s coverage attributed its general description of BPPV to the Mayo Clinic, but the reports do not provide a dated statistic on how often the condition occurs, so none is given here.

Because vertigo can have several causes, a diagnosis announced in the media should not be read as a guide to any other person’s symptoms. Anyone with persistent dizziness or vertigo should seek care from a clinician.
