Short answer: Uttar (2025) has a warm, well-observed mother-son story at its core, but its artificial intelligence subplot arrives too late and is developed too thinly to carry the film’s central question. The relationship scenes work. The technology thread mostly gets in their way.
Uttar is a fictional Marathi feature, not a documentary. This review covers it for readers who want to know whether the drama is worth their time, and where the film sits in the critical conversation.
What the film is about
Uttar is the directorial debut of Marathi screenwriter Kshitij Patwardhan. Renuka Shahane plays Uma, an All India Radio announcer and single parent. Abhinay Berde plays her son Ninad, who is working on an AI project at college. Hruta Durgule plays Kshipra, Ninad’s childhood friend, and Nirrmitee Sawant plays Uma’s sister Shanta.
Rotten Tomatoes summarises the premise as a radio-host mother in Pune who grows apart from her son until a project brings them back together, and lists a runtime of 2 hours 30 minutes. That runtime is the figure Rotten Tomatoes gives; other databases may differ.

The emotional engine is familiar: a mother who carries most of the family’s emotional labour, and a son who is withdrawn and absorbed in his work. The film’s question is whether machine learning can supplant human emotion. The review that most closely examined the film, Nandini Ramnath’s notice for Scroll.in published on 12 December 2025, describes the project as an AI project and frames the theme in those terms. It does not go into the technical details of the system Ninad is building, and this article does not either.
Where the relationship works
Ramnath’s strongest praise is for the scenes between Uma and Ninad. She finds their bond poignant and sometimes funny, and says the performances give Shahane and Berde several strong moments. She also singles out Durgule, whose Kshipra reads as a mature friend rather than a plot device.

These scenes are where the film earns its feeling. They are quiet, domestic and specific, and they do not need the technology plot to be affecting. The film’s best material is the mother and son failing to talk to each other in ordinary ways.
Where the AI thread falls short
The review’s reservation is structural rather than tonal. Ramnath says pacing problems bog the film down, and that the central “aai versus AI” debate emerges too late for real exploration. Her summary is that the film is slow to take off and self-conscious at times, though patient scenes do produce emotional moments.

The ending is where this matters most. The film closes just as Ninad comes to understand Uma as his “north” and his answer. That is an affecting image, but because the argument between human emotion and machine learning has not been given room earlier, the resolution feels as though it arrives before the question has been fully posed.
Two questions to judge the film by
| Question | What the review supports | Verdict |
|---|---|---|
| Does the mother-son drama earn its emotional moments? | Ramnath praises the performances and the poignant, sometimes humorous scenes between Uma and Ninad. | Largely yes, through patient scenes |
| Is the AI subplot developed clearly and early enough? | Ramnath says the “aai versus AI” debate emerges too late for full exploration. | No, according to this review |
| Does pacing support the ending? | Ramnath says pacing bogs the film down and the ending arrives as Ninad reaches his understanding of Uma. | Weakened by slow pacing |
A more critical trade view
Film Information, a trade publication whose review also ran on 12 December 2025, offers a harder assessment. It describes the film as a story of Uma and Ninad’s bond, with the college project forcing the two to interact more. It judges the story as not especially new, and argues that the drama lacks emotional force when seen from Ninad’s point of view.

This is one outlet’s view, and it does not contradict Ramnath’s praise for the relationship scenes; it questions whether the screenplay offers much beyond the premise. Readers should treat the two reviews as separate assessments rather than a consensus.
