Spoilers for Black Mirror Season 7, Episode 6. Clone Nanette rejects Bob’s offer to put her in the comatose real Nanette’s mind when she realizes he plans to keep another copy for himself. She defeats him and merges with her real-world counterpart. The crew survives Infinity’s deletion, but the final reveal is that they, too, are inside Nanette’s head—not safely back in independent bodies.
How does “USS Callister: Into Infinity” end?
The crew reaches the Heart of Infinity, where they encounter Bob, a digital copy of Robert Daly who has been expanding the game from within. Bob offers clone Nanette a way into the mind of the real Nanette, who is in a coma after being struck by a car in the real world.

Nanette sees the deception in his offer: Bob intends to make a copy of her, leaving one version under his control. She refuses, defeats him, and merges with her comatose counterpart. Infinity is then deleted, but the crew is not erased with it. The final reveal shows them inside real Nanette’s mind, sharing her perception.
What does the final twist mean for the crew?
They survive, but have not escaped into independent lives
The crew’s survival is real, but the episode does not show them returning to physical bodies or entering a separate digital world. They remain inside Nanette’s head, and the cited ending account leaves their long-term status and any route back out unstated. Netflix’s official explainer describes them as stranded again, while TIME’s recap also identifies the final reveal as an upload into Nanette’s head.

Nanette’s rescue carries a cost
Clone Nanette has grown into a capable captain through experiences the real Nanette has not shared. Their merger saves the crew, but it also leaves open what happens to the clone’s leadership and identity inside a mind that belongs to her real-world counterpart. Cristin Milioti offered one interpretation: clone Nanette might be reluctant to relinquish command because she would return to an office where colleagues do not respect her, and because the crew are the people who understand her. That is Milioti’s reading, not a definitive explanation supplied by the episode.
Why Bob’s offer matters
Bob frames his proposal as a rescue, but it repeats the original story’s central ethical problem: treating digital copies as possessions rather than people. Charlie Brooker described the original crew as “virtual clones” who are “effectively humans in a video game.” For ordinary players, he said, shooting them may feel like part of a game; for the crew, “It’s life or death. There is no out of the game for them.” The sequel applies that same distinction to Bob’s plan: making a copy is not the same as giving Nanette control over her own fate. Netflix Tudum’s recap of the original episode gives Brooker’s comments in context.

How the sequel gets to the Heart of Infinity
- The crew enters the wider game. After escaping Daly’s private universe, they face danger from other Infinity players, who can injure or kill them. They steal credits to obtain supplies, drawing attention.
- Real Nanette investigates. She follows reports of stolen credits, discovers the digital clones, and confronts Walton. She is struck by a car and falls into a coma.
- The Heart becomes the crew’s destination. Walton had recruited Daly to build Infinity, and the episode reveals that a Daly copy—Bob—has been expanding the game from inside it. Walton fears exposure over the cloning.
- Nanette chooses against Bob’s control. At the Heart, she recognizes that his offer means keeping a copy for himself. She defeats him and merges with the real Nanette.
- Infinity disappears, but the crew remains. The crew survives the game’s deletion inside Nanette’s mind; the episode does not establish what happens next.
Is the ending happy?
It is hopeful, but not a clean escape. Nanette defeats Bob and the crew survives Infinity’s collapse, yet they are still trapped in a precarious situation inside her head. Brooker called it “sort of an ultra Black Mirror ending”: hopeful in one sense, while the characters remain “not in a great situation.” Walton actor Jimmi Simpson described it as a “complicated and honest ending.”
How this follows the original “USS Callister”
The 2017 Season 4 opener introduced programmer Robert Daly, who created digital copies of colleagues in a private game modeled on his favorite science-fiction series. The sequel picks up after those copies escape into the wider Infinity game. The original episode won four Primetime Emmy Awards in 2018, including Outstanding Television Movie and Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, Movie or Dramatic Special, according to Netflix Tudum.

Has a third “USS Callister” episode been confirmed?
No definite sequel plan was announced in Brooker’s April 2025 interview. He said he would not rule out continuing the story, but that there was no definite plan to do so. That is a statement about the position at the time of the interview, not confirmation of the franchise’s later production status. Brooker also said there are other Black Mirror episodes he would revisit if the right story came along. Netflix Tudum’s ending explainer includes the interview and further cast comments.
