Usher’s *Coming Home* Review: A Wide-Ranging Return, Not Another *Confessions*

Usher’s 20-track *Coming Home* showcases his vocal ease across R&B, trap, Afrobeats and dance influences, but its range comes at the cost of the cohesion of *Confessions*.

Usher’s ninth studio album, Coming Home (2024), is best heard as a career-spanning showcase rather than a tightly plotted follow-up to Confessions. Its 20 tracks move between silky R&B, trap, Afrobeats, new jack swing, amapiano and French-house touches. Usher’s vocal control and ease remain the project’s strongest constants; the abundance of styles and some awkward lyrical choices make its impact uneven.

What “coming home” means on the album

Apple Music presents Coming Home as a return to Usher’s roots and a celebration of his legacy. It also describes the record as his first project as an independent artist and notes his reunion with L.A. Reid, who signed him at 14. For Usher, the title refers not just to a sound but to reconnecting with longtime creative relationships and returning to a comfortable working space.

In his Apple Music interview, Usher calls the album “a love letter to the experience that I have as a man” and says, “Love is so central. It’s the source of it all, man.” The songs range across love, lust, separation and reconciliation, though that thematic breadth does not become one continuous story.

How it sounds: range over one signature lane

The album’s stylistic variety is part of its appeal and its central challenge. Apple Music points to bedroom-pop textures, bouncy songs such as “Kissing Strangers” and “Keep on Dancin’,” trap on “Cold Blooded,” Afrobeats on “Ruin,” and new jack swing on “I Love U” and “Please U.” Pitchfork hears the record drawing on Atlanta sounds from the 1990s and 2000s as well as more contemporary production.

That variety gives Usher room to shift from intimate vocals to club-ready movement without abandoning his smooth, controlled delivery. But the 20-song set can feel more like a tour through possible Usher modes than a single album with a steadily developing mood. Pitchfork describes the sequencing as pairing tracks by mood, while arguing that the project works better as a record of his range than as a unified narrative.

Standout collaborations and revealing detours

The guest list connects Usher to several generations and styles: Burna Boy, 21 Savage, Summer Walker, Latto, The-Dream, H.E.R., Pheelz and Jung Kook all appear. The opening title track features Burna Boy; “Good Good” pairs Usher with 21 Savage and Summer Walker; “A-Town Girl” features Latto; and “Cold Blooded” features The-Dream. H.E.R. joins “Risk It All,” Pheelz appears on “Ruin,” and the album closes with Usher’s remix of Jung Kook’s “Standing Next to You.”

“Good Good” and “Risk It All”

“Good Good” is framed by Apple Music as a song about an amicable breakup. Usher described it as a romantic conversation that avoids toxicity, a cooler and more conciliatory counterpoint to the album’s more possessive or messy relationship perspectives. On “Risk It All,” Apple Music identifies a tender ballad, and The Independent notes how H.E.R.’s vocal winds around Usher’s falsetto.

“Ruin” and “A-Town Girl”

“Ruin,” with Pheelz, gives the album an Afrobeats-facing moment; Pitchfork associates its production with amapiano. “A-Town Girl” takes a more knowingly local route, interpolating Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girl” and recasting the conceit around Atlanta with Latto in the mix. Both Pitchfork and The Independent find the idea uneven or awkward, illustrating how the album’s willingness to experiment does not always yield a convincing song.

“Keep On Dancin’” and “On the Side”

Pitchfork describes “Keep On Dancin’” as a Tricky Stewart-produced electro track with French-house movement; The Independent hears an echo of Gloria Estefan’s “Rhythm Is Gonna Get You.” The difference in those descriptions captures the album’s backward- and forward-looking instincts. “On the Side,” meanwhile, places the narrator in an affair with a side-piece, a blunt example of the flirtatious, morally untidy persona that recurs across the record.

Where the album succeeds—and where it loses focus

Critics broadly recognize Usher’s vocal command, charm and ability to make a groove feel effortless. Pitchfork’s Julianne Escobedo Shepherd, writing on February 14, 2024, praises his enduring ability and hears strong singles in a project that pays tribute to R&B across decades. The Independent’s Helen Brown, writing on February 11, 2024, also hears mostly silky grooves and values the collaborators, while criticizing some of the lyrics as blunt or awkward.

The main trade-off is breadth versus cohesion. Coming Home does not build the kind of connected storyline associated with Confessions; it instead presents an established artist moving among styles, guests and relationship scenarios. That can make it rewarding as a selection of individual moods and performances, but less satisfying for listeners looking for a focused album arc. The Independent’s mixed response to songs such as “A-Town Girl,” alongside its contrast between “Good Good” and “Cold Blooded,” underscores how uneven the writing and song choices can be.

Is Coming Home worth listening to?

Yes, especially for listeners who want to hear Usher’s voice adapt across contemporary R&B and a range of dance and pop influences, or who prefer a large album with multiple collaborations to a narrowly unified statement. Start with “Good Good,” “Risk It All” and “Ruin” for three distinct sides of the record; “A-Town Girl” is a useful test of whether its more playful, referential experiments work for you. If the narrative momentum of Confessions is the main reason you return to that album, Coming Home is a looser proposition.
