Usher received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 2024 BET Awards on June 30 at Los Angeles’ Peacock Theater. The live broadcast muted portions of his acceptance speech because of an audio malfunction, BET said; the network directed viewers to its full, uninterrupted version.
What the award recognized
BET described the award as recognition of Usher’s career of more than 30 years and his impact as a songwriter, performer and record producer. The network’s retrospective identifies him as Usher Raymond IV, a singer, songwriter, dancer, actor and entrepreneur.

In his remarks, Usher thanked the performers and acknowledged his mother, wife, children, fans and mentors L.A. Reid, Jermaine Dupri, Babyface, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. BET quoted him saying, “This hasn’t been easy, but it’s been worth it. I want to thank each performer and acknowledge every detail because those moments that become legacy are about having fun and creative expression.”
He also spoke about fatherhood while recognizing his mentors: “This is the year of the father. For fathers to stand up for their sons and daughters. Success has a million fathers, and mine starts with these guys here.”

Why parts of the live speech were muted
BET attributed the missing audio to a technical problem, not to a content restriction. In a statement reproduced in its July 1 recap, the network said, “Due to an audio malfunction during the LIVE telecast, portions of his speech were inadvertently muted.” BET apologized to Usher and said viewers could watch the full, uninterrupted speech on BET platforms and in the encore broadcast.
