Uprising is Netflix’s 2024 South Korean action drama about childhood friends whose lives are torn apart by war, servitude and revenge. The title is ambiguous, so this article covers the Netflix film—not the separate 2026 drama The Uprising.
Which film is Uprising?
The best-supported exact-title match is the 2024 South Korean film Uprising, directed by Kim Sang-man. Netflix credits Shin Chul and Park Chan-wook as writers; its publicity also describes Park as a producer and co-writer. Netflix’s Media Center listing identifies the film and its creative team.
The title is not unique. Focus Features describes a separate 2026 drama, The Uprising, about a revolt against King Richard II, with Andrew Garfield as a rebellion leader and Paul Greengrass as writer and director. It is a different film, not another name or edition for Netflix’s Uprising. Focus Features’ title page covers that production.
What is Netflix’s Uprising about?
Netflix places the story in 1592, when King Seonjo flees the capital during the Japanese invasion of Joseon. Cheon-yeong, who has spent his life trying to escape servitude, is close to Jong-ryeo, the heir to a prestigious military family. Jong-ryeo tries but fails to secure his friend’s release.

War changes their relationship. Flight and mistaken blame turn the childhood friends into adversaries: Cheon-yeong joins the righteous army, while Jong-ryeo later returns after seven years of war seeking revenge. The film’s central question is how two once-loyal friends end up facing each other as enemies. Netflix describes it as an action drama. Netflix’s synopsis and publicity provide the film’s official premise.
Is Uprising based on real events?
Netflix’s official synopsis sets the film during the Japanese invasion and describes a seven-year span of war, but that plot description alone does not establish how closely the characters or events correspond to historical people and events. It is not enough to judge the film’s historical accuracy. The available information here supports describing the setting as presented by Netflix, not making a broader claim about the film’s fidelity to history.
