Until Dawn Is a Surprisingly Clever Video Game Adaptation

The 2025 Until Dawn film uses new characters and an original plot instead of retelling the game’s branching story. That may be its smartest adaptation choice.

The 2025 Until Dawn film does not try to put the game’s branching story on screen. Instead, it uses the game’s survival-horror premise to tell a new story with new characters—a choice that gives the adaptation a way to translate the pressure of player decisions into a fixed film.

Is the Until Dawn movie based on the game?

Yes. Sony identifies the 2025 feature as based on the PlayStation Studios video game, with David F. Sandberg directing and Gary Dauberman and Blair Butler credited for the screenplay. But “based on” does not mean the film retells the game’s plot. PlayStation’s January 16, 2025 announcement says the movie will feature “fresh characters in a new, original story.” PlayStation’s announcement makes the distinction explicit.

The game follows eight friends returning to an isolated lodge after two members of their group disappear; player choices affect who survives. Sony’s film synopsis, by contrast, describes characters trapped in a location where they face recurring deaths and must survive until dawn. The shared title and survival-horror framework connect the works, but their characters and plots differ. Sony’s film synopsis outlines the movie’s setup.

Does the Until Dawn movie follow the game’s story?

No. The film takes the title-world and survival premise in a new direction rather than adapting the game’s group of friends and its lodge story. That is more than a cosmetic change: the game’s defining structure is that players make decisions and live with their consequences, while a movie has one sequence of events for every viewer.

Until Dawn - 4K + Blu-ray + Digital
  • One year after her sister Melanie's disappearance, Clover and her friends head into the remote valley where she vanished in search of answers. In an abandoned visitor center, they are hunted and murdered one by one ... only to find themselves reliving the night again and again - each time with a new terrifying threat. With limited deaths left, they must survive Until Dawn to escape.

A faithful scene-by-scene transfer would have to choose one route through the game’s branches—or try to compress many incompatible outcomes into one film. Either approach risks making the defining feature of play feel like a plot summary. A new cast and original plot sidestep that problem. The movie can stand as a fixed horror story while drawing on the game’s broader idea of facing danger and trying to survive.

What makes the adaptation approach clever?

It adapts the experience, not a single playthrough

In the game, survival is personal: the player makes choices, and those choices shape the outcome. In a film, there is no equivalent audience control. The adaptation’s more promising route is to create suspense through what characters do, how performers convey fear and resolve, and how editing controls the timing of danger. Those are film tools, not substitutes for player choice. The cleverness lies in choosing a story form the movie can actually use rather than pretending the game’s branching structure can transfer intact.

It keeps the connection without requiring a retelling

PlayStation’s description of fresh characters and a new story gives the film room to be its own narrative while remaining recognizably tied to Until Dawn. That distinction also matters to viewers who have never played: they can approach the movie as a standalone horror story, not as an adaptation whose plot requires prior knowledge.

How does the movie differ from the game?

Aspect Game 2025 film
Characters and setup Eight friends return to an isolated lodge after two members of their group vanish. Fresh characters in an original story; Sony’s synopsis describes recurring deaths and a fight to survive until dawn.
Audience’s role Players make choices that affect who survives. A fixed screen story; viewers follow the events rather than choose them.
How the connection works Survival horror shaped by player decisions. A new plot built around survival-horror ideas, rather than the game’s sequence of events.

The game details in this comparison come from PlayStation’s game listing; the film’s new-story distinction is stated in PlayStation’s film announcement.

Do you need to play Until Dawn before watching the movie?

No. The film’s original cast and plot mean the game is not a prerequisite. Playing it can provide a useful point of comparison: you can see how a story built around player decisions differs from a film that must select and present one fixed chain of events. But that comparison is an added layer, not homework required to follow the movie.

For anyone who wants to try the source game, Sony lists Until Dawn for PS5 on disc. The rebuilt PS5 edition launched October 4, 2024, with a third-person camera, updated visuals and sound, new collectibles and locations, and re-cut narrative sequences. Those are features of the game edition, not the movie. PlayStation Direct’s PS5 disc listing describes the game.

Why the film’s new story is a meaningful adaptation choice

The film is not clever simply because it changes things; changes can also lose the qualities that made a game distinctive. Its adaptation strategy is compelling because it recognizes a specific constraint: the game’s story belongs partly to the player’s decisions, and a fixed movie cannot reproduce each person’s path. A new story lets the film pursue its own pacing and performances while drawing on the broader survival-horror premise.

That makes the movie best understood not as a substitute for the game’s branching experience, but as a separate work in the same franchise. Viewers seeking the game’s characters and choices should play the game. Viewers open to a new story can watch the film on its own terms.
